Introduction
I’ve reached a point in my life when I look over my shoulder regularly. Every experience, we’re told, contains a universe of meaning and significance. We usually miss that completely; I certainly have.
Whether we know it or not, we all leave tracks. We’re embedded in the memories of everyone we’ve known. I read over these poems and I’m instantly transported to the moment each came into being. I can recall where I was, what I was thinking, what I was feeling.
Looking at them now, I can also seen a loneliness, a somber conviction that no matter how much I might wish otherwise, I had to confront the most significant moments in my life alone.
That does not mean I was never loved. I was; and if that love dissolved into something much less satisfying, it does not lessen its meaning. If anything, I value it all the more. I may not find love again in my life - time claims all - but I can recall each embrace, and remember how I discovered love was real.
What traces have you left? Have you examined them? What do others remember about you?
Those seem like good questions to me.
