Fractured Saga

A political science fiction/action thriller set in a gritty, dystopian, near future America.

Ebooks are only $2.99 on Smashwords, Kindle and Nook!

The United States is in a state of organized chaos. It is a melting pot run by the corporate-appointed President, Walter Kane. The military has been eradicated, democracy has been abolished and the citizens are kept in line under the strict word of God.

But a revolution has been set in motion with a ground-breaking technology eighteen years in the making, courtesy of Dr. Dana Dalton. She is the head research scientist reporting directly to President Kane, who is also the CEO of Olympus Tech. She has been working in the shadows, against all rules for the good of the people...but she soon realizes that the lines between research and morality become increasingly blurred.

Welcome to The Athena Initiative.

Welcome to the dawn of the New Republic.

Join the revolution in the first book of the pulse-pounding,mind-bending science fiction Fractured Saga, where 18 year-old Dylan King escapes a life of abuse, only to be thrown into a political game where her sanity will be tested and her very existence will hang in the balance. Will she embrace this technological gift that she's been given or will she fight it to the death?

Dylan is a street-smart, lost girl who lives among the dregs of society in Prison Ward Four...among the rapists, thieves, junkies and killers. Will she rise to her calling as a catalyst for the new world or will she survive Ward Four at all?

Take a ride into Dylan’s twisted reality and witness Athena Rising.

Ebooks are only $2.99 on Kindle, Smashwords and Nook!

Excerpt
Dylan lit a cigarette and silently watched the sky beyond the crematory, which was still churning out billows of smoke into the night. She took what she considered a shower and she only considered that because she got wet, but the water in this building sucked. It was full of iron deposits and the run-off from the furnace that burned the dead. Washing off your sin in Ward Four was the equivalent to coating yourself with misery instead. But luckily she’s stolen enough perfume and toiletries over the past year that she smelled clean enough to pass as a Day-Tripper and not a resident.

Dylan liked it here up on the roof. She was normally the only one up here as the junkies in this building rarely could muster enough energy to make the extra ten feet in their pilgrimage. Add to that the paranoia induced by the drugs that made them scared of heights and plummeting to their certain deaths and Dylan had a nice spot of solitude to waste away the evenings under the dead sunset.

She sat up here often to listen to the organized chaos below her. It gave her perspective and always kept her grounded, knowing that she was literally and metaphorically above this place. She knew she had more in her but there wasn’t anything she could do about it until her birthday. Once she was legal, she was free to leave since she wasn’t sentenced here but as it did every year when you have a day coming up that you looked forward to; the days preceding it dragged their sweet ass and multiplied the loneliness that was hopefully soon going to dissipate. It was as if fate itself was cruelly making the road to happiness as unbearable as it saw fit.

She could hear clearly the crazy shit happening over on Lafayette, she had a clear view of the rebel gay community over by the closed down subway station and she could hear some stray gunshots pinging through the air. Whether they were from a wall sniper or a Day-Tripping hunter, she couldn’t tell. But either way, she was out of the chaos and sitting well above it, looking at the aurora in the distant sky that was created by the ashes of countless corpses of men and women who recently met their makers.

Dylan reached into her pocket and pulled out the cell phone that she stole from the dead socialite. She spun Rick’s eternity ring and spun it numbly, as if in a trance. She knew she was going to see him next week. She knew she was going to wake up happily next to his naked body every morning before they both went to work and she knew that she’d have movie nights and romantic dinners in when it rained. She knew there’d be arguments and make-up sex and she knew that their wedding was going to be beautiful and amazing. She knew what her dress was going to look like and she knew that her wardrobe was going to consist of more than hoodies, jeans and Converse. No, Downey has brought out the woman in the girl and she couldn’t wait to have the opportunity to live like one.

But as she watched the silver spinning around her finger, she wondered if it was going to happen at all.

Ward Four had a way of killing any signs of hope. It was a lot like the sky of the horizon that she was staring into. The sun would come out daily. It would look stunningly beautiful as it crested the broken horizon, giving a small gleam of hope over the barren landscape and then suddenly the furnace would crank on and usurp that beauty to make way for death and despair. The smoke would billow into the sky as the forgotten dead would dissipate into the dirty air, never to be heard from again as the sun was swallowed by the misery surrounding it.

She feared in the lowest depths of her stomach that Downey wouldn't remember her. She hoped silently on that roof that he’d be waiting for her with open arms and that he wasn’t in the arms of someone more his age.

Was she worth waiting for?

Was she worth marrying?

Was she worth being alive and sharing the air space with the people who contribute to this great society we’re all living in?

In the calm, reflective silence of the roof, Dylan thought of herself as nothing more than a survivor. Normally an admirable trait, but she couldn’t stop the thoughts of who she has really become. She’s a thief with a lack of empathy and a broken young woman. She wore her scarred life like they were trophies of failure and weakness and as she pulled on her cigarette; she knew that her threshold was arriving faster than she anticipated. She needed to get out of here and into a normal life before she does something down here that she couldn’t turn back from. She could rob the wrong person and wind up in the furnace across the river. Hell, she just had random blackout sex with a stranger; it wasn’t above the realm of possibility that she was indeed pushing her luck to its breaking point.

All of these thoughts littered her mind as she smoked alone on the roof, spinning the token of Downey’s blind devotion on her finger.

Reader Reviews for "Fractured: Athena Rising"

Reviewed by Randolph Giles 4/1/2013
If you like a good political sci-fi thriller like the Matrix, V for Vendetta, Equilibrium and Escape from New York this is the book for you. I went to the Fractured Athena Rising website and listened to some of the music as I read the book which really put me there along with the characters. I can see this book as a movie. I look forward to reading the second edition. Don't miss out on reading this book!
