When Rosemary Reagan Hall asked me to edit and review Knock Turtle, the second children’s book in her Lamb E. Boy series, I was delighted to do so. Being familiar with her work, I was eager to see how she would, once again, use her unique “play on words” to create an entertaining and creative story that would captivate young minds. Knock Turtle did not disappoint me.

Readers quickly discover that Lamb E. boy (a stuffed animal) does not like going to bed at night, even though little Haley is there with him. Of course, he does love the bedtime stories, whether read by Haley or her mother. He tries to keep the stories going as long as possible to put off having to go to sleep.

On this particular night, Lamb E. Boy decides to be adventurous as he climbs out of bed and begins searching the house for turtles—a special kind. He even uses a telescope in hopes of seeing some of them but, instead, views some other interesting critters. He doesn’t understand why he can’t see any turtles since Haley had assured him that they didn’t sleep at night. Or did she?

Readers will see Lamb E. Boy repeat words that Haley uses; however, he gives them a whole new meaning when he repeats them after her. This is what leads to his search for turtles before he finally snuggles in close to Haley and falls asleep.

This is a “fun” book, but there are lessons to be learned within the pages. The illustrations bring the characters to life and provide a vivid background for the storyline.

Knock Turtle is an appropriate and imaginative picture book for young children, and I highly recommend it. My nine-year-old granddaughter kept herself—as well as her five-year-old brother—entertained with the storyline and pictures. Purchase a copy today!
