Just in time for Halloween, the handbook accompanying the Body Art 1 Face Painting course at Universal Class. It contains all of the lessons with their illustrations, and is a great step by step guide to keep in one's binder for reference.
Body Art 1 Face Painting
Lesson 1
Your Tools
Makeup Brushes
Makeup brushes are special because they are made specifically to handle the kinds of greases and powders used for cosmetics, with a minimum of broken off bristles. They will be what you'll use for most major application.
Art Brushes
Art brushes are there to pick up the slack for whatever painting can't be done with makeup brushes.
You can often get a much thinner line with an art brush when you need it more cheaply than with a makeup brush. A plain set of art brushes is cheap enough that you won't be too sad about the harsh cleaning methods you'll need to use for anything that will be in contact with the eyes, ears, or lips.
Sponges/Wedges
Sponges serve the dual purpose of applying makeup and sucking off the excess moisture.
Cotton Swabs
Cotton swabs are excellent tools for blending. They are also cheap and disposable, so when you're working at a carnival, you have a new set of brushes to use for simpler designs on each face.
Wooden swabs can even be sterilized in an autoclave, but this is generally not necessary considering most face paints and makeups are not sterile.
