"Smoking Mirrors" Synopsis:
“You’re dead.” This threat may differ from those reverberating in a
victim’s head, but the innuendo always remains the same. One in three
women are or will be abused by an intimate partner. Shannon’s road to
recovery is shattered in an instant. She finds her new marriage under
siege as she becomes immersed in the aftermath of abuse. Shannon is
further devastated when she is ordered to leave her son, Jay, at the
mercy of the courts and his abusive father. The sheer resiliency of this
little boy is truly heroic. Shannon learns to conquer her overwhelming
fear by standing up and finding her voice. She adamantly perseveres
through the maddening chaos and injustices to victory.
Excerpt
Running, I glanced over my shoulder to see if I was still being followed. Seeing nothing, I retreated into the shadows. My lungs were burning but the panic wouldn't allow me to succumb. I desperately tried to find a hiding place before it was too late. I came upon a cubbyhole and quickly dove in. I tried to make myself as small as possible so there would be no outside indications of my presence. In the distance, I heard footsteps. My heart felt as if it were ready to explode. It was clear the footsteps were coming my way as they progressively grew louder. I was certain my pounding heart would give me away. I tried to fight the overwhelming fear as I knew it would only bring my demise.
