Kate Stanhope, widow of a British banker, fails to sense the danger lurking about her when she opens her home in the Lake District of England as a hotel. The first weekend the hotel's open, a guest is found dead in his room. DCI Nick Connor investigates and concludes Kate could well have been the intended victim instead of the guest. But who'd want to kill Kate? While Nick struggles to catch the elusive killer, he falls in love with Kate, in spite of his vow to never love again. But can Nick catch the killer before he finds Kate? And will Nick's clues to love lead him to Kate's heart? (Wait for Me is the sequel to this book)
Excerpt
The voice on the other end of the line made her feel she wasn't totally alone wih the corpse on the bed. Kate repeated what she'd said to the operator and gave directions to the hotel. Hanging up the phone, she wiped her eyes and left the room.
As she walked down the corridor toward the stairs, a door clicked shut behind her. Nerves taut, she whirled around and found nothing except the empty corridor. It must have been the wind.

Brian Kavanagh
Recently widowed, Kate Stanhope turns her home in the English Lake District into an upscale hotel. Disaster strikes the first night when a guest takes ill and dies. He has been poisoned. the police investigate and decide that Kate was the intended victim. Kate is drawn to Nick Connor, the DCI investigating the death. A second murder occurs then Kate's life is threatened. Tension builds nicely with mysterious phone calls, blackmail, a gunshot attack, before the identity of the killer is confirmed. Clues to Love is essentially about relationships, the love developing between Kate and Nick, Chris and Diane, and Charles and Clarissa, a relationship fraught with guilt and fear. Clues to Love is a crossover between a romance and a mystery and as such, readers of both genres will find this most rewarding.

American Kate Stanhope moved to the English lake District with her ailing older husband. After his death, she needed money in order to keep the home, so she converted the estate into the King's Grant Hotel. But she didn't know the trouble that would soon occur. When a guest is poisoned at the hotel, DCI Nick connor is assigned the investigation. The suspects are many and the clues aren't adding up. A second murder and an instant attraction between Kate and Nick complicate matters further. Who will be the next victim? Can Nick find the murderer or murderers before Kate is forced to shut down the hotel?
From the beginning, suspense holds the reader enthralled, not letting go until the end of the book. Non-stop thrills and a complicated romance are skillfully woven together, creating a wonderful read. If you enjoy romantic mystery and suspense, read Clues to Love. Once I opened the book I couldn't put it down. Nancy Madison has created believable characters within a framework of mystery that belongs on your "keeper" shelf. Very highly recommended!
