Dorothy A. Atabong's novel, THE PRINCESS OF KAYA, is a well-written romantic story that reminds you of a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The setting for this love story takes place on the coast of West Africa.

The bond between Princess Kaya and Aadil is apparent from their first encounter. As Kaya is returning from school in England, enemy soldiers ambush her entourage and a mysterious, yet handsome man rescues her. Her father, King of Kaya, is grateful to the unknown stranger, yet continues on to celebrate Kaya's birthday, as well as announce to the world and Kaya, of her betrothed to the Prince of Bashir.

The Prince of Bashir, Anthony, reveals to her that he's been in love with her since they were kids. She feels guilty that she is not excited about her father's choice for a husband, because Anthony is not only handsome, and intelligent, but he genuinely loves her. She becomes confused on whether she should marry Anthony, the man her father chose for her or make her feelings for her rescuer, Aadil, known.

Aadil has led a difficult life and his struggle continues when he falls in love with Kaya. He is internally tortured because she is off-limits and will be marrying another man. There is also a lot of negative history between his country and Kaya's country. He is torn between the love for his country and his love for her.

Aadil leaves a lasting imprint not only in Kaya's heart, but he touches her spirit. Her and Aadil secretly meet and consummate their union on various occasions. For the sake of tradition, she goes along with marrying Anthony. Anthony eventually finds out about Aadil, but loves her so much that he forgives her affair and still pursues marriage with her. Will Kaya choose "tradition" over "love?"

Ms. Atabong adds quite a few twists and turns which keeps THE PRINCESS OF KAYA interesting and captures your attention to the very end. The readers will find themselves rooting for "true love" over an "arranged love."

The Princess of Kaya - An emotionally weighty story that will not be easy for readers to choose sides.
