The New World Order of the early nineteen-eighties that had begun so frantically was gone without as much as a whimper. The people lead peaceful and serene lives with little social consciousness beyond that of personal well being. No unhappiness, but no joy. Life is simple, a perfect existence of peace and tranquility similar to the lifestyle of the mid-twentieth century yet with incongruous advances in technology. Pollution, toxic waste, tobacco and alcohol, as well as sex are unknown.
G.O.D. (Guardians of Democracy) decrees if and when a woman is to bear a child and she is artificially inseminated. No one questions the procedure. No one objects. There are only whispered rumors of the old society's way of procreation. Only the Immune know for sure.
The Secretary of State, T. Bower Yates secretly runs the entire country, while the Presider and his cabinet go through the motions of government from the nation's capital, Topeka, Kansas. Confident that soon he would rule the entire world, Yates is unaware that Santo Kasawa in Kyoto has an identical plan. The only obstacle to either man is the two-percent of the populace unaffected by the chemically induced apathy syndrome.
Immune comes closer to becoming actual history every day…
What began in the 1980’s came to a head in the year 2000 with alleged voter fraud.
But in the 2004 election, many felt that voter fraud was rampant and the last chance to regain their country was lost. Half the nation cheered while the other half grieved for the Republic.

Immune is the story of drug-induced apathy and it’s inevitable steady-state; utopia for some, hell for the 2% of those who are immune.

Excerpt

HAMILTON, BERMUDA
Gaithway Cottage
Reginald could hear his old partner from the glory days in MI-5 coming down the hall, tap-thump, tap-thump. He could hear him muttering about his blasted cane, his blasted stiff knee and the whole blasted world in general.
"How's it coming, Reggie?" Harold asked as he puffed his way to the high backed wicker chair in the corner.
"Listen to this: Can you sympathize with an entire country of people who would willingly embrace slavery? I think not!" Reginald waited for a reaction that never came.
"Damn it Harold. I need your input!" he scolded.
"Sounds priggish,” he answered as he cleared his throat. "Don't beat around the bush. You're going to have to grab them by their balls, if this is going to work."
"All right then: While two Presider's were taking credit for the collapse of Communism, the Master Manipulator was free to implement his insidious plan. The truth is, Communism simply collapsed under it's own weight."
"Yes,” nodded Harold. "Now you're on the right track! How are you going to handle to fact that the Prime Minister knew of the Clouding Effect and did nothing?" asked Harold.
"I'm going to state that fact quite clearly. I cannot in good conscience lay all of the blame at the feet of the Americans. Many Head's of State knew of the process, but it served them well. It wasn't until they realized that they too were targets, did it present them with any moral dilemma!"
"Excellent. Since you want my input, I see that the whole process began with the leaders convincing the American public that government owed the people nothing. They convinced them that they must just become better consumers and the market place would seek it's own level. And it did, the sewer!" added Harold thoughtfully.
"Go on,” said Reginald and he typed notes furiously.
"Their leader was always saying that Europe did not have any banking insurance, and the country should follow suit. What they didn’t say was that Europe did not allow the banks to steal their depositors money's and go unscathed.
"Good point! That will make a whole chapter by itself. What else?"
"I do hope you cover the billions of dollars sent to third world countries while their own people had no socialized medical care. There is so much involved---"
"I know."
"Then there’s the almost Revolution and the whole Clouding Issue---"
“I have most of what you said already written. Start reading and editing as you go.”
“There’s so much to cover, my friend. I doubt we’ll have time. If he gets word of our endeavor---”
“But it will be quick--- we’ll probably never know---
They both nodded and resumed working.

SOLAR_FLARE , Mr. Scott
The year is 2044 and in the capital of the Uniform States of America, one T. Bower Yates secretly runs the government. The Presider and Vice Presider are merely figureheads over a country whose populace is affected by a chemically induced apathy syndrome. Two-percent of the population is immune
to this chemical, and the story mainly centers around two of these people; Mayton Rude and his wife Gretchen.

The society created here is reminiscent of Orwell's 1984. Every morning, the citizens of America pledge their allegiance to the most sacred flag of the Uniform States of America. The acronym GOD stands for Guardians of Democracy, the power behind the society. Life is peaceful and tranquil, but empty.
Though I totally disagreed with the political points made in this book (and there are many of them) I found it a good read. Most difficult for me was the thinly veiled allusions to G.W. Bush, who, though never named specifically, was referenced as the son of a former president, who, when elected, almost caused World War III due to one bad decision after another. The author reports that the book was copyrighted in 1992, which would make this downright prophetic. Her negative feeling toward conservatives comes through quite clear.
I was intrigued... The prose is concise and enjoyable, the pace quick and satisfying. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to pick up another work by Cheryl Gray, but with hopes that it wouldn't be so political.

Intriguing, complex story that offers todays events as the catalyst to a very different future. Not dark like Blade Runner but.... pleasant. I love the idea of 2% of the people are uneffected by the apathy drug. I can identify strongly with the main character. Great read!

Book is almost prophetic, given the current political state of the world. Fast paced and a non-formula ending that make for a very satisfying read. I recommend this book to all sci-fi fans.
