Professional Reviews

Affaire de Coeur
Joe Patterson and Jessica Thomas were best friends. A bad home situation caused by a drunk mother and a leering stepfather forced Jessica to move to Los Angeles at seventeen. Jessica gets a job at Matte restaurant where she meets Martina Medina who offers her a job as an escort. She gracefully declines. When her mother needs a liver transplant, Jessica accepts Martina’s offer.
Joe marries Maxie Holstead who provides the impetus for him to enter the political world. As Joe rises, Jessica avoids him because she does not want her background to hurt his chances at becoming a future senator. When a client of hers, Brian Foster, becomes abusive, demanding, and dangerous, Jessica turns to her champion Joe for protection though she knows she can never have the man she loves.
Fans of contemporary relationship and dramatic suspense tales will relish Caught in the Rain. The story line enables the audience to see deeply into the prime character Jessica and understand what makes her choose the path she selects. Though the key support players (his wife and her "boyfriend") are too nastily caricaturist, readers will take pleasure from this strong character study that displays the talent of L.C. Martin.

Leaving home for the first time is always a big step. It's an even bigger step when you are abused, neglected and fearing for your safety. That's how Jessica Lee Thomas, age seventeen, felt. Jessica was leaving home not because she was ready but because she feared being raped by her stepfather. Jessica's mother became an alcoholic and has slowly been dying since the day Jessica's father died four years ago. Jessica finds a true friend in Joe Patterson. She explains to him her reason for leaving and although he has tried to talk her out of it she sets out for Los Angeles to make her own way in the world.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Jessica immediately calls her girlfriend Dana who agreed to collect her from the bus station. Now Jessica wants to stand on her own two feet and pay her own way immediately finds a job as a hostess for an upscale restaurant. While working one night she is spotted by Martina Medina who owns and runs an escort service. Jessica is not stupid and knows just what an escort is supposed to do. She knows that she does not want a part of that life.

Jessica is already working two jobs when she receives a call that her mother is gravely ill and needs her to come home. Upon her return to Los Angeles her friend and roommate Dana tells her that she is taking an acting job in New York in two weeks and doesn't know when she will be back. Jessica feels trapped, but unwilling to go back home and face her stepfather she calls Martina Medina who immediately employs her as an escort, which allows Jessica to quit her other jobs. Jessica's main concern is that she doesn't want to have sex with her clients, as she is still a virgin. Martina explains that she can start her out with clients that only want her company and it will be up to her to decide when she wants to change that arrangement.

Joe, in the meantime, is moving on with his life. He becomes more involved in politics and marries Maxie Holstead who helps him further his career. Maxie knows of Joe's feelings for Jessica and has for some time, as they all grew up together. A chance meeting puts Jessica back in Joe's life once again.

Jessica, being distraught over Joe's marriage to Maxie, breaks the rules. Jessica becomes involved with a client. Brian Foster, the client, has a hidden side, which he had yet to show to Jessica. He talks her into quitting the escort business and moving in with him. He then helps her to set up her own business. Jessica was unaware that Brian would become so jealous and violent over her working and being in contact with other men. She never knew she would be placing not only her life but also the lives of others in danger because of her working hours. After taking a beating from Brian and later finding her friend Ben dead she does the only the thing she knows to do. She calls on her best friend Joe who immediately drops everything and comes to her rescue. After finally getting away from Brian, Jessica starts a support group to help other women to step out of the life of abuse.

Due to Maxie's interference in Joe helping to save Jessica, Joe becomes angry and is force to make a choice of staying with a woman he likes but does not love or moving on with the only woman he has ever loved. The tragic death of his child puts a strain on his relationship with both Maxie and Jessica. Joe now has choices to make. Will he stand by Maxie and help her through this ordeal or will he go to Jessica to continue to help her get on with her life after being attacked by Brian? Will their love for one another stand the test of time?

CAUGHT IN THE RAIN is a book that I would recommend to all readers. It has a lot of twist and turns. Not as much suspense as I like in my books, however it is well written. This is a book that will hold the reader's interest. I will add this book to my list of books that I share.

Here you have all you could possibly want in this fine coming-of-age novel: grippingly suspenseful it is a youthful romance that is tenderly innocent while the protagonist, Jessica, is bursting at the seams to explore those regions where innocence can be tested and perhaps too easily lost; where she might allow passion to steer her to that desperate landscape where live her alcoholic mother and her mother's sleazy boyfriend, Ray. While Jessica is not even aware of the slippery terrain on which she is standing, it forms the invisible tension in the novel. The reader is always waiting for that one moment she might lose her footing... A very moving novel!

Jessica Thomas is a woman who flees the horror of her home, takes up the lifestyle of an L.A. escort, and learns how to make the best of her business; meanwhile, her childhood friend Joe embarks on a political career. When they meet again, emotions fly at cross purposes, yet love between any two people has but a slim chance of survival amid deeply buried secrets.
