S. K. Smith - STC
The old boy network finds itself turned upside down in chaos and comedy when the 1980s usher young professional women like Samantha Matijevic into the male-dominated Satellite Test Center.
It’s 1984. The country is pulling out of a recession. The Reagan administration is beefing up defense. The space shuttle, Challenger, is flying. And the Satellite Test Center, known as the STC, is staffing up.
Among young professional women, Samantha Matijevic Clark gains entrance into the old boy network of mission control inside the STC. Behind the secrecy of closed doors, how does Sam cope with men behaving badly? Will it break her spirit? Will it derail her career?

Holding a lime green sign that said “UNCLEARED,” Mr. Isidro Garcia led his flock into the bowels of the mysterious STC. Mr. Garcia wore a gray pullover sweater over his apple-shaped physique. His curly charcoal hair and clothes blended into the patchwork of the gray pieces of carpet inside.
Sam’s brown eyes flitted about the windowless halls with its entrances to secret modules barred by cipher locks. “I feel like a leper … like when they yell unclean wherever you go.”
Tan looked incredulous. “You were a leper?”
“Not me.” Sam felt flustered. “That was done to lepers in the Bible.”
Tan returned Sam a blank look. Then John explained with a chuckle, “Not everyone here knows the Bible.”
Sam puckered her lips. She realized she was not in the old America anymore.
