Sculpting the Heart
Surviving Depression with Art Therapy

by Joyce White

Don't you just love the title, Sculpting the Heart? It is an indication that a poet resides within. Yes. And a sculptor. And a painter. But though those things are very important for the subject of this book, so is this one: Author Joyce White is also a sage.

That this book is about Surviving Depression with Art Therapy as the subtitle suggests is really secondary to the inspiration it affords. Liberally sprinkled with four-color images of artwork and photography that will make you smile, this book is about being happy.

Though even the casual reader may notice that the formatting, design and editing are not perfect, I beg anyone who is suffering from depression (and others seeking happiness) to not let that dissuade them from absorbing—and appreciating—the heart within. The world is not black and white only. Those who miss the beauty because they are caught up in being judgmental might very well miss much joy in life. This colorful, bright, smart and helpful book would be one of them. Listen to the anecdotes, the voice (the song!) of the author and heal thyself.

Excerpt

I am no doctor and I write for fun and wellness, mine and others. Writing poetry, journaling and art making are onderful creative ways to turn the burning inside our heads into positive thinking, researching and recording. I think too many of us focus on the pain of life rather than all that is good.

When that perfect line comes to rest in a poem for me, I say, "Thank you, God, for giving me that." I discovered all we need to write a poem is an initial brain-burst - - a memory or a nagging emotional feeling to get started. Many of us prefer the simple old fashioned kind of poetry, less negative, bent on healing open wounds rather than describing them. Composing a poem is a lot like making love. Nobody sees the poem happening but it always arouses us and usually ends too quickly! These thoughts and words were taken from my book, Sculpting the Heart.

I found when writing poetry, we can't help but confront our past history to break its hold over us. I am not always aware, at least on a conscious level, of the demons that drive my art. I know for sure God and his creative angels were my partners in everything I did. I purposely write sublime. The world is too full of sad and ugly. Reality is very restrictive so I like to mix in a little fantasy. I like to write the world absent of the things that bring us pain and anxiety. It is said the human mind is like an umbrella. It functions best when open. I like to keep my mind open to possibilities and - - what if?

When sculpting our hearts with poetry, it is good to approach poetry as if it were a game. This is the way I do it, anyway. We need to play connect-the-dots with words and feelings, paying close attention to the sound and flow of our memories, as well as their arrangement on the page. I play connect-the-dots with sentences, images and pictures.

I am always looking for ideas, metaphors or topics that interest me. I'm always looking for an initial thought burst, a memory or a feeling I can blow out of proportion, and use in a grand over-indulgent way. "You may discover your best poems while writing your worst prose." says Joyce Carol Oates, "As soon as you connect with your true subject, you will write." I think this goes for poetry, too. As soon as you connect with your true emotions, you can sculpt your heart with poetry.

Joyce White has aligned herself with spiritual principles that govern the workings of SCULPTING THE HEART WITH ART THERAPY. She uses these principles in the most conscious and creative way for healing.
"Joyce White has aligned herself with spiritual principles that govern the workings of SCULPTING THE HEART WITH ART THERAPY. She uses these principles in the most conscious and creative way for healing."[Sage Sweetwater - Celebrity Firebrand Lesbian Novelist]

SCULPTING THE HEART WITH ART THERAPY is in totality, about the possibility of renewing life. It is a profound writing of a sense of release conveyed through poetry, art and clay juxtaposed with flapping wings of freedom.

What highly validates this book for me, is the kind of creative expansiveness Joyce White gives of the soul. It embraces goodness and wellness through the healing acts of creativity, contiguous with God and dream. It is a writing which has concentrated form, and to the restless, makes contact with faith anchored in transcendent spirit. It embraces philosophy of dualities, balancing light and dark through poetry and prayer, existence and essence. I appreciate Joyce White's work. She gives all that she has and then some. Joyce opens her heart and shares her personal life, things about her family, death and dying, loving and praying, creating and imaging. She talks of Jung as if he were right beside her guiding her positive energy and assisting her dreams, Joyce says "I'd like to think this book helped others to begin living their own divine purpose." This book has done just that. It's a book of picture symbols, words, and sculptures which absorb our subconscious and represent thought, and if read and used correctly, includes vast information from all of the six senses; sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, and intuition. Joyce White has self-awareness to know specifically the areas of creativity, and what a full life is for her. She shows how the creative process is an external form of whatever we imagine internally.

The benefits of this book are many. I highly recommend SCULPTING THE HEART WITH ART THERAPY. Inspiring! The mental, physical, and spiritual idea to right living! Joyce White, you have won my respect.
