Circle of Life Trilogy
Echoes of the Ozarks V is an anthology of stories, essays, and poems about people in the Ozarks as seen by native and residential writers who live and love here.
"Another Kind of Needy" (p.113) is the story of the formation of the unique prison ministry-literacy program established 19 years ago by two Ozark friends, Arkansas native Don Heern and the author, Patricia A. Oplinger.
The Storybook Project is a grassroots literacy program that serves both male (Grimes Unit) and female (McPherson Unit) inmates incarcerated in the Newport State Correctional Facility in Newport, Arkansas. Three years ago, the program expanded to the North Central Correctional Facility in Calico Rock, Arkansas which houses only men.
Each facility has separate leaders and volunteers because of their geographic locations.
"I wasn't born in Arkansas, but I got here as soon as I could. I traded the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania for the foothills of the Ozarks. For fourteen years I have awakened to cardinal songs and fallen asleep to katydid chorales. What a deal!"
