At a time when her life in near perfect, a dark secret from Sharon McCoy's past surfaces. She feels compelled to leave her husband, mac, whom she loves beyond measure. Her friend, Dr. John Knight, is a benevolent psychiatrist who offers her the strength of his friendship and the shelter of his home. He and his wife subsequently welcome her into the family. Sharon mysteriously reminds them of their deceased daughter Melissa. Soon after, a new dilemma plagues Sharon when someone begins stalking and calling her. She thinks she knows who the stalker is...but does she?

Bloodlines, look-a-likes, fate, and misconceptions all play a role in this complex and twisted tale of suspense. The warmth with which the Knight family surrounds Sharon allows her to sort through the milieu and find the answers about why she looks and acts exactly like Melissa, about who her father is, and about who is stalking her...and why? The question that plagues her the most is whether she and Mac will ever resume their life together.

The car roars past. She picks up the bike, and holding onto the handlebars runs deeper into the forest before turning into the direction of the house. She can hear the car's engine below. The man is going slower as he searches for her. Tears are tickling her cheeks. She wipes her face with her sleeve. The engine is shut off. She hears the click of a car door being shut. Frozen with fear, she tries to quiet her breathing as she listens. She hears the crunch of needle drift behind to her left. The sounds are getting closer. She wants to run, but something she saw on the nature channel compels her to remain silent and unmoving....

The memory of her terror in the woods returns the minute she climbs into bed. She waits a while before taking her alarm clock, pillow, and blanket into the bathroom. She locks the door, and within minutes sleep takes her.

Professional Reviews

A Review by Clifford Stevens
The tangled web of human relationships in modern society provides the fodder for high drama and personal anguish that are the stuff of a growing body of literature. In Countermeasures, the writing team of carol Randy brings that drama alive in a novel of suspense as they unravel the tangled web that holds the two main characters firmly in its grasp.

This is a love-story quite unprecedented as Sharon McCoy and 'Mac' husband and wife, find themselves torn apart by a set of circumstances completely beyond their control, with a cast of characters that reminds one of Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters. Working from a devilishly clever plot, the drama unfolds to reveal a love undying and self-efacing, with twists and turns that only master storytellers could make believable.

This is not the story of two lovers kept apart by the villainy and cowardice of others, as in Manzoni's Betrothed. It is the story of two lovers torn apart, after vows have been made and their love consummated in wedded bliss and years of devotion. Their lifetime happiness hangs in the balance as clue after clue drives them into the deepest despair. The way out of that despair is what the novel is really all about, showing the grandeur and the spiritual audacity of undying love.

Clifford Stevens is the author of twelve published books including Flame Out of Dorset, a historical novel published by Doubleday & CO. He was at one time the executive editor for The Priest magazine and was later editor/publisher of Schema XIII. His forthcoming novel is titled The Treasure of Kefer Shimon. It is a Biblical historical fiction.

Reader Reviews for "Countermeasures - A Dangerous Web of Misconception"

Compelling. I thought I would figure it all out but then realized the author had written something I had no idea about. Funny you should have a review start with "a tangled web" since that's the title of MY first novel! Small world.

Suspenseful, original, emotional… A GREAT READ!

What a fantastic book! The action feels very real and the twists make this one difficult to put down. Because of a well thought out plot, the reader will appreciate a story that is easy to follow. I couldn't help but sympathize with Sharon McCoy because cruel fate ruined her perfect life. She discovers something almost unbelievable about her husband. Fortunately, Dr. Knight, a psychiatrist and good friend, helps her. Then, she realizes someone is stalking her! The suspense becomes intense as the story progresses. The end was… I would go into more detail, but you'd be annoyed if I spoil a great story for you!

I highly recommend "Countermeasures." Are any movie directors making it into a movie?
