Forms of Madness tells the story of Jordan Bauer, an investigative reporter
who unwittingly becomes a pawn in an international conspiracy. A deep
emotional hook is planted in Jordan, and by tugging in various ways on this
connection Jordan is led to discover clues that ultimately reveal to him the
part he's been playing. Jordan is finally confronted by the conspirators and
presented with two options. He can attempt to disclose the conspiracy to the
public, or he can walk away—but there exists the inevitable fine print.
Though Jordan is convinced the public should be made aware of the dangers
the conspiracy represents, he knows that presenting undeniable proof will be
nearly impossible. To walk away would be the natural choice, but the hook
that was planted years earlier makes this option even more painful than
pursuing an unreachable goal.
While Forms of Madness s fictional, it is woven into a tapestry of familiar
geographical sites and real international events. Memorable events include
the 1980 Olympics in the Soviet Union and specific activities that took
place during the early years of the Soviet incursion into Afghanistan. Most
elements of the story play out in locations across the Soviet Union and in
southern California.
Forms of Madness begins in 1985. Mutual distrust between The United States and the Soviet Union has perpetuated an arms race that the U.S. is winning, but at the expense of socially and economically destabilizing a nuclear superpower.
After introducing the main characters and their relationships, the story
retreats to the beginning of 1980 to provide the foundation for the main
theme. Agreeing to a proposal put forth by a CIA operative, an
investigative journalist named Jordan Bauer gains legal entry to the Soviet Union. Jordan's alleged project is to illuminate for the western world the progress achieved by the great Soviet social experiment. But this is Jordan's secondary mission. His main objective is to make contact with a conscience-stricken staff member at a Soviet bioweapons research center, north of Moscow. Events surrounding his Soviet adventure lead Jordan to Tallinn in the Estonian SSR. Here, an emotional connection is established in Jordan that alters his life and forces him to be an unwitting player in an international conspiracy.
The story reenters 1985 and finds Jordan to be an unwitting pawn in an
international conspiracy. The emotional hook implanted five years earlier is considered by the conspirators to be sufficiently secure to begin using to direct Jordan to play the role he has been assigned. Guided by subtle clues provided for him, Jordan puts most of the pieces together and concludes that indeed something of global significance is going on that presents a grave danger to the public. At the proper moment he is swept up by the conspirators and the role he had been playing is revealed to him.
Ultimately, Jordan is driven to choose one of two paths, to attempt to
expose the conspiracy—and most certainly fail—or simply to walk away. But the hook set in Tallinn is too deep, and Jordan knows that to walk away could destroy him.
