Art poked his head out of the culvert. He heard the sound of an engine. Then, he saw a vehicle come over the crest of the hill. At first, he couldn’t tell what it was, but as it came closer he recognized the distinctive shape of a German scout car headed right towards them. Two German soldiers sat in the car, rifle barrels visible beside them.
Art propped his rifle on the edge of the snowy road and took aim at the Germans.
On the other side of the culvert, Ron carefully placed two grenades in the snow in front of him.
Neither man said anything as the German scout car moved towards them.
