Excerpt
“What’s the problem, Joe?” Mr. Thompson asked, as he put his left hand on Joseph’s shoulder.
“Um, um …” he hesitated. “Nothing sir, I was just wondering.”
“Wondering what?” Mr. Thompson asked sternly.
“Just wondering sir about …” But before he could finish, Mr. Thompson continued.
“Let this be the last time I catch you with your head on the desk. If this happens again, I will surely see to it that you get the message. Do you understand that, mister?” Joseph looked at him and nodded his head slowly.
“Don’t shake your head. Don’t you have a tongue in your mouth?” he asked Joseph.
“Yes, sir,” Joseph answered.
“Then use it!” the principal retorted, as he placed the end of the tamarind whip that he always carried against the left side of his face. “Did you copy the homework?” he asked, this time in a much stronger and disgusted tone.
“Some of it sir, not all,” Joseph replied, fear gripping him.
