About the book
Rob Callaway, the grandson of an ex-slave marries a girl from another county who is the granddaughter of an ex-plantation and slave owner and Lumbee Indian. He brings her to his community, which bears his sir name and is controlled by his father. A white friend of the family teaches him the blacksmith trade. He is very successful. However, he and his family still experience the effects of bigotry, hatred, racism and segregation. Although tragedy befalls members of his extended family, he is able to prevail. In spite of this misfortune, he continues to hold the family together.
