In the early days of September 2005, thousands of people felt compelled to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina in some way, and many of us soon traveled to the devastated Gulf Coast.  And for the majority of us who did, the close encounters we had with her victims changed us forever.

This book of poems depicts some of my thoughts and emotions during my pet rescue efforts in the Gulf, and it contains some of the stories of the many remarkable souls I encountered on my many Katrina journeys, both human and animal.

These are the stories of the victims and of their rescuers whose eyes I will remember for the rest of my natural days.

A portion of the proceeds from each book sold will be donated to animal shelters now housing many of these ‘left behind’ dogs and cats.

This Book of Remembrance
Is dedicated to every Katrina victim,
Both human and nonhuman,
Both living and deceased,
Who endured a hellish nightmare
That most of us can only imagine;
And to the many compassionate souls
Who rushed to assist them,
In whatever way they could.

An Intimate and Involved Collection of Many Truly Heartfelt Poems

Reviewer: Midwest Book Review

Through Katrina's Eyes: Poems From An Animal Rescuer's Soul by Ed Kostro is an intimate and involved collection of many truly heartfelt poems, including a memorable quote from various idols and figures from history.

The Maine Man: "Until he extends the circle of compassion/To all living things,/Man will not find peace." --Dr. Albert Schweitzer

I met a very compassionate man from Maine/Whose dauntless mission was extremely plain/He would stay down on the ravaged Gulf Coast/Rescuing these animals that he loved more than most/Through both the scorching heat and the freezing rain//He was up and eagerly ready to go each dawn/While many of us in camp still let out a yawn/And he would spend twenty hours each day/Assisting these left behind pets in every way/Now - three rescued dogs frolic on his lawn//And There Were Hundreds of Volunteers/On the devastated Gulf Coast/Who Were Just Like/This Very Dedicated/Maine Man

Ed Kostro has done it again. The poems in this book will have you reaching for a handkerchief one moment and laughing out loud at the next. Ed is able to capture his unique experiences of the Katrina battlefield, the horrendous strugle of the animals that were left behind, and the horrifying aftermath of a devastating hurricane in few words - words so powerful that a novel could not do them justice. The poetry of Kostro touches one's soul, and once you read this book, you will never look at the human or animal condition in the same way again.

Stacy Mantle,

Four Paws!
When Katrina hit and the animals were left beyond, many people felt compelled to help. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to personally go to the Gulf to help out.

For those who couldn't be there, "Through Katrina's Eyes" not only gives you a view of what things must have been like, but also let's you FEEL the emotions of those that were there through poems from an "animal rescuer's soul." It will make you laugh, cry, and most importantly remember Katrina and the everlasting effects it had on both humans and animals alike.

While it has been over a year since Katrina hit, there are many animals that were left behind that still need a home. Contact your local animal shelter or Humane Society to adopt one of these orphans.

Ed Kostro himself brought home three needy hurricane orphans. Even though he broke his promise to his wife that he wouldn't bring back any animals - let's hope his wife has forgiven him!

A portion of the proceeds from each book sold will be donated to animal shelters now housing many of these 'left behind' dogs and cats.

I have read most of your poems on Katrina here at the DEN and I must confess that they have left a "mark of pain" in my soul which could only be relieved by allocating some of my time to help people and animals on daily basis.

Mr. Ed, as a former resident of the Mississippi Gulfcoast (my family still lives there). I applaude you! You didn't ask why we didn't move away from a place we know gets mega storms (I did go through Camille in 1969). You came and saw a need for our beloved 4 legged friends, be them cat, dog, or other, and worked to rescue them. I only wish that you had been there earlier that year when I lost my 16 yr old Cairn Terrier Rudy in Gulfport. Thank you for being there for them. I love your spirit. May God welcome you into Heaven with scores of Angels singing your praise. Thank you.

Ed, I went to the post office today and was excited to bring home your book, "Through Katrina's Eyes" I anxiously made a pot of coffee, was thankful that I had the house to myself, well Boomer was with me, my faithful little sidekick. Anyway, I sat down and began reading and couldn't stop until I reached the final page...I cried, smiled, cried, chuckled, my spirit soared as I read of the many rescues, the efforts of those that put their lives on hold to save the lives of precious animals whom would have perished if not for yourself and other warm hearted and caring human beings. I was deeply moved by the description of the animals eyes growing dark as the human that had caused their heart to swell with hope wasn't who they were expecting. My heart ached as I read of the little flower in the excellent expressed poem...this is one book that I will not soon forget, and will find myself coming back to revisit and share with others. I have always admired your writing and caring and selfless spirit, which has only deepened after reading this remarkable book. I saw a side of the victims of Katrina that I hadn't saw before. My classroom sent supplies to the many homeless victims when this terrible tragedy struck, looking back I now see that we should have sent more cat food and dog food for the many animals. I must say that your book is a very touching and unique with outstanding imagery, poetic stories, and a very moving display of compassion for the victims of Katrina that so many forgot about. Enjoyed the poems very much will be eager to recommend it to others!

From his experiences as a volunteer in the Gulf Coast pet rescue efforts, the author exquisitely captures the heroism of veterinarians, cats, dogs, and volunteers who fought bravely to honor and preserve the relationship between animals and people.

This poetry, written from the author's heart and soul, described his first-hand observations of the undaunted strength of the human-animal bond following Hurricane Katrina.

Ed, it took 9 months for me to finally get this book ordered, I'm such a slow poke. But, even now, a year after the events that you wrote about, it's still an amazing story. Sadly, I know the story is not over yet. Not as long as there are still animals in the world without homes.

Like everyone else that has left reviews here, I hope you sell millions of copies!

Through Katrina’s Eyes poems from an animal Rescuer’s Soul is a compelling read, brings the reader into both the despair and optimism of the rescuers and the confused, anxious ones who were left behind. The Poems are not always easy to read as we find the discouragement and hopelessness depicted in stark realism. The joy of reunion or adoption restore the reader’s ability to deal better with the despair grimly portrayed.

A warm hug combining congratulations, blessings, admiration, affection and thanks, dear Ed, for you and your new book, which I'll be looking forward to reading, because I know that its contents, indeed from the soul, will be just as fulfilling as the ones of "Curious Creatures", which I have come to treasure. Your writings, thus your books, always breathe with the true love of one whose Life is not only with, but deeply and expansively FOR the Animals: their needs, their welfare, their teachings, their feelings, their... yes, their soul.
My heartfelt wishes of the greatest success, dear friend.

God bless you for writing that book - Many people need to know the truth - The media did not do it justice. Rescue was a big project. People are good in time of disaster knowing because of grace this could be them. In Lafayette everything possible was done to sccour them; many stayed finding jobs and relocating and others went away with new hope and respect for this City of Love and Compassion. Gov Blanco did all she could and I believe FEMA did also. Let us praise rather than put-down.
