Brad Harris came back home because his former Boss was killed. Karen McCormick, his dead bosses daughter is Brad's ex. Now both of them face the same fate as her father.
The Birds Nest
Brad Harris left Oklahoma City for Denver to start a new life. Mostly he needed to get away from his failed relationship with Karen McCormick. Their break up left his relationship with her father, his boss Martin McCormick, in bad shape. The partnership offer gave him an easy way out.
When both of her parents are brutally murdered in their quiet Edmond home three years later. Karen, alone and afraid, practically begs him to come back. Once back in the city, Brad quickly discovers that things are not as they had seemed.
The Billion Dollar Law Firm Martin had built was in a shambles. The explanation the police gave for the McCormick's murder was full of holes. Martin had left him a few surprises, including shady business dealings with bad people. Karen was no more over him than he was her.
Faced with reviving a failing business and keeping his promise to Karen to find the truth, Brad learns both of their lives are in danger.
He must dig deep inside of himself to rebuild the company and his relationship with Karen, while keeping them both alive.
With the help of some old friends and a few new ones Brad has to crawl through a web of deceit, lies and police corruption to find the truth. In the end he must draw on all of his reserves and face an arm of the Russian Mafia.
Thinking of her and her father reminded Brad why he was here. Someone had brutally murdered her parents in their peaceful, exclusive Edmond home two days ago.
She had called him, begging him to come. He had no idea why she wanted him here. He still was not sure why he had agreed to come. She had been upset which was understandable.
He knew her well and there was more to it. She was more than upset over the loss of her parents. She had sounded scared. Maybe that was why. The why, did not matter at this point. He was here because she had asked him. That was enough for now...
...“Brad, daddy wanted me to call you a few days ago, before… He said he needed you here. He said you would not listen to him. That maybe I could get you to come.”
“Karen, I never heard from Martin. I had no idea he needed anything. It is not like him to hesitate to ask for, or demand anything.”
“No, he said he wouldn’t call you. He said you would probably think it was one of his tricks. To try and get you to come back to work for him. He told me if I called…If I asked you, then you would come. I would have called Brad, I should have. I felt like he was manipulating me. I thought that maybe he was trying to get you to come back to work for him. I felt like he was using me.”
“Karen, in spite of some of the things he did, your father loved you. I find it hard to believe that even he would be bring himself to use you in any way.”
“Truth is Brad, I wanted you to come back. Only I wanted the old you. The honest reason I didn’t call is because I didn’t know which of you would come. I know that’s kinda weak, but it’s the truth.”
She dropped her head letting the cigarette fall to the ground. Her hair was covering his view of her face. He could tell she was crying again.
“I can’t help but feel, if I had called you. Maybe they’d still be alive.”
