This is a gathering of translations of Dutch and Flemish poets, all highly regarded in their native land. Here is a range of varied and talented voices. It is an invitation to discovery, delight and recognition. A book to keep at hand.

Small Barbarism

When he had found the courage
to let his hand grow
in accordance with the secret wishes of
no longer a beggar palm
no longer the parrying fist
but claw

he sharpened his nails on
granite and shook
his arms awake from
the hammock of the past

and struck as always
in emptiness.

   Ellen Warmond

Uncorrected Thought

each hour
time pecks
a grain of corn
from the barn
of my life

perhaps my granary is
nearly full
that doesn't help
time is patient.

Professional Reviews

Poems from Holland and Belgium
Stevens is an ideal translator for all who are gathered here. His forthright natural method (which shines in his own poetry) matches the quality of Dutch syntax, and he is able to move comfortably through the spaces of Dutch experience. There have been earlier attempts, but this is the best so far.
Small Press Review

Poems from Holland and Belgium
This book is fascinating for the range of poets that it represents as well as for the amount of control the translator clearly has over his materials. Good translations such as these will endure.

What a delight to pick up this superb book of poetry at my local library. I commend Mr. Stevens on his excellent work and for bring to light this often unknown to contemperary readers of English.

I commend him for this true poetic delight.

Being bi-lingual myself, I know what a difficult task it can be to translate mere conversation, let alone poetry written by talented poets in their native tongue. I was delighted and amazed by their work, as well as the amazing translation ability shown by Cj Stevens. I'll be reading this volume again and again. Michelle Close Mills
