A Whirling Wind Ö We take cover in our lives, hope for protection against nature. Wind, rain and snow assault us, drive us inside where we gather our courage, noses pressed against windows, waiting for the wind to wane. Somehow we keep our sense of humor, bonding with our families and friends until the next storm approaches. The poetry in Dust Devils thrusts nature into our psyches. We are buffeted by the elements and we react, remembering the distant days of childhood while we explore the mature paths of parenting and the dangers of miscommunication. Larry Rochelle takes us by the hand, shows the hurt inside, and then lets us feel the glory in a sunrise, the cool wetness of sand on a beach.

Dust Devils

Brick wall dims
at twilight,
yet the ball comes back,
a yellow blaze,
faster than itís hit.

Overhead, lights
snap, their eerie
orange fights
with yellow.

A breeze stirs,
trajectory at first
enhanced, but shifting currents
raise the dust
to devilís work.

My stroke is warped,
the yellow
ball-blaze disappears.

I swat but miss,
dust in eyes,
torture in soul.

Left alone,
my spirit rises,
yellow ball a dusty portal.
Racket poised,
a slam,
the devil dance defeated.
