The tall, muscular boy cringed in terror at the words of the foreigner with the stiff moustache standing beside Chief Koele. Kuliano's English was not good but he understood what the man had said. It was the first time since his parent's death that he had felt utterly helpless to control his own fate. He found himself blurting out his defiance without time for thought. "No wan be going Oahu, Chief Koele. No go! Wan stay Kalalau Valley. Strange man no right take Kuliano. No go! The hereditary Chief of the Kalalau Valley stared at the boy's outburst in shock. Such outright defiance of an order from Prince Akaha was unheard of in the Valley. Prince Akaha was the highest heritary ruler of Kauai. All commoners obeyed him without question. "No choice Kuliano!"
