Happily ever after doesn't always include Prince Charming. Spicy Spinsters is a collection of short stories about middle age women who have never had husbands. The characters emerge from various economic, ethnic and moral backgrounds. From the virgen to the high-class call girl, from the office clerk to the hospital oncologist, these women represent those of us who helped shape today's society as well those continuing to adjust to independence thrust upon them. Embracing spinsterhood, the women in Spicy Spinsters are like the treasured spices symbolizing them at the beginning of each tale.

From MY MAKE YOU DO WRONG MAN . . . . . Al had his drink, and I didn't think I should have to go out into a blizzard just because he was a louse. I could at least get a meal for my trouble. After dinner I looked into his eyes and said, "You're married, aren't you?"He sighed and nodded."I did something you should know about," I said."What?" he asked.I told him I called his house, and his wife answered. Al winced first and then seemed amused."Don't worry about it," he said. "Most women wouldn't have mentioned it all. Thanks for telling me.""I assumed you were single," I said.He asked quietly, "Does it bother you?"page 57     Excerpt
From AUTONOMY . . . . .Do I feel sorry for myself? Quite the contrary. Though I sometimes regret not giving birth to a child, I certainly can live without becoming Step-Nana to your grandchildren. Having never married has given me strength. You see, I already know how to be alone. I will never be afraid of living without a man. I won't be fearful my husband will leave me for another woman. In addition, I won't be like my mother, mourning a lifetime companion. I will never ask, "What am I going to do now that my husband is gone?" I have learned to stand by myself. (page 137)

Reader Reviews for "Spicy Spinsters: Stories of Seasoned Bachelorettes"

I heartily recommend "Spicy Spinsters" to anyone who has reached a certain age in a busy, productive life, only to find herself questioning past choices because they have not led to true love. The stories in this book illustrate this dilemma in a variety of ways, with a diverse cast of characters. My favorite stories in the collection are the ones that provide a stark contrast between sisters orr other close relatives who have made opposite life choices. For example, "Corpulent Sass" and "When the Twilight Is Gone" both describe the progress of an envious sibling in learning to appreciate her own life, while recognizing the cracks in her sister's happy facade. Each story, whatever its subject matter, has humor, an uplifting resolution, and in some cases a surprise ending. Well done.
