Prologue
The narrative under this title is intended to recount the history, in anecdotal format, of the Mercer family cabin on Great North Mountain. The mountain is just outside the village of Gore and about 17 miles West and South of Winchester, Virginia. The Larrick family from whom the land was purchased can trace their ownership to a land grant by King George IV, King of England. The Larrick property and most of the surrounding territory was home to the Shawnee Indians in times past.
We purchased our plot on September 1972 and the building was completed February 1973. The cabin has been occupied off and on by Earnest and Kate Mercer and their offspring for more than thirty years at the time of this writing.
