This 242 page book is part 1 of a two volume paperback collection of short fiction stories.
Some thirty plus short stories are offered in this collection. Forest Raven with a beast so fierce no man can stand to look at him, and a legend grandpa told start the reader on a most interesting reading journey. Driven Snow introduces us to a woman doctor who wisely decides to find a better solution than sitting and freezing, or becoming hysterical when she finds herself stranded in a snow storm, facing a bear with little more than a cell phone, a snow saucer and a survival blanket and the outcome seems more than grim. A Special Gift is a poignant read telling of hard times, a kind hearted neighbor and a very special gift. Not In My Courtroom with judge Lissy Borden is a downright interesting read. Oh Sweet Katharine presents a mystery to unravel, while Sleep Deprivation adds a note of wry humor. On the pages of The Pig Pond a dire situation is afoot, a mule named Molly, and a herd of wild boar only add to the tale. Weathered Barn told in the first person is filled with excitement, a pounding rain, a handsome man name Jeff, a flat tire and a dream. Rounding The Cape is set in the year 1602 as we set sail in a Dutch sailing vessel with the seventeen year old story teller.
Writer MacQueen’s formidable writing talent is showcased in Woven Threads as she carries the reader from tale to tale with ease. Writing now in first person as a young boy or a bemused woman, then as an onlooker, and again as a teen aged story teller MacQueen’s fast paced prose keep the reader moving from tale to tale.
Snappy patter, merriment, puzzlement, and a touch of history are all offered in the selections. Richly drawn settings, engaging story lines and a quick wit are all adroitly captured in this easily read, action packed work. Woven Threads can be read as a whole, or in bits and pieces as time dictates.
The tales are varied in scope from humor to touching to slice of life. Length of each narrative is short enough to be read ‘on the fly’ so to speak as the reader sits with a cup of tea for a few minutes while supper is cooking and the house is relatively quiet. Voices of the principal characters are natural and believable.
Nice addition to the summer reading list. Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.
