Notes for Teachers
1. Einfach Lesen appears termly. It contains a variety of texts which are likely prove of interest to year 9 and year10 pupils - sport, music, current affairs, matters of concern to young people and some fiction. We hope that students will be proactive and contribute opinions to the magazine. Opinions from teachers are also welcome. Comments can be addressed to german@zigzageducation.co.uk.
2. These texts are aimed at students who have reached National Curriculum level 5 in Attainment Target 3 and are working towards level 6. In other words, "pupils can understand a range of written material including texts covering present and past or future events …. Their independent reading includes authentic materials." They are moving towards being able to understand "familiar language in unfamiliar contexts" and "scan written material for stories and articles of interest. They are more confident in using grammar and context to work out the meaning of language they do not know." They are, in other words, ready to start reading German texts the same way that they would English ones. They need to move away from ones produced as part of a school textbook, or even as part of a reading scheme. Yet a move to completely authentic materials may be too big in one go. Einfach Lesen is a type of Easy Reader, which covers material that would be of interest to the able pupil at the end of KS3 and the beginning of KS4.
3. The emphasis is on reading for pleasure. Students should be encouraged to select texts which interest them, just as they would texts in their own language. Therefore, no work sheets, which test reading comprehension, have been provided.
4. It is important that students are given some instruction in how to approach reading material which is not in their mother tongue. Some ideas are given about this in the notes for students.
5. A generic work sheet has been included, which may aid the students to gain more from their reading.
6. Einfach Lesen is meant to be as flexible as possible for teachers and pupils. Some of the articles will date; others may still be usable in several years' time. There may be preferences amongst your students. We have therefore made it a photocopiable resource, so that teachers may make as many copies as they like, as often as they like. It is probably in the student's best interest to be allowed to keep any sheets they use. The gain in their reading skills would justify the price.
