Sage Sweetwater Creative Properties

A captivating pulp novel, The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler is a unique mix of lesbian fiction, fairytale, and Native American mythology.

UPDATE: 2-26-2013 Sage Sweetwater's published Native American lesbian novel The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler going to full-length ANIMATED feature film. Why Sweetwater's loon is diving deep and what the inspiration behind it is.

Another Sage Sweetwater Creative Property headed to film with a canoe-load of reasons. Sweetwater has written many inspired pieces of poetry of The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler. The success of the animated Walt Disney feature film Pocahontas (1995) finds Sweetwater tapping her sap of creativity.

The river is floating the second coming of women prepared to open their third share of the shop windows of the lesbian community. Each canoe is carrying a purple flag and ethnic mannequins with dark-brown nipples, flying high and proud.

The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler watches the designer-slip crafters paddle upstream towing three canoes of nude life-size dolls with exquisite dark aureoles, that sexy teaser halo surrounding the nipple.

They must have a passion for this! Did you see those nipples! Those nipples are a perfect match to Grayson's freckle crayon! Just bigger dots! What's more natural than the dusting of a nipple in a mannequin factory, matching the color of women's skin to the ethnic market? A freckle or a nipple, they're both incredibly sexy. Blige wants them because they are simply scandalous! Give them a rub, won't you! A girl's never too old to play with dolls!

And then came malls, stores with no windows, so no mannequins. When she moved to France, she walked past some thirty store windows with mannequins advertising designer lingerie. With a voyeuristic fascination for the Parisian window dressers, Roselle de Montaigne wrote a lipstick lesbian novel about a window dresser. When it was published, it never hit the bookstore shelves. It was marketed in every fashion store window in Paris with the mannequins, the book cover flaunting fashionable lesbianism with a beautiful nude model posing alongside a nude mannequin, the model's curled tongue on the mannequin's red-lipsticked nipple. The novel was titled Tease La Femme.

"Heaven's erasers!" one of the monks exclaims when he sees attractive dark halos surrounding sets of nipples floating by. "Erase lust from a man's mind ... blot out Holy One, the flesh erasers I have just seen!"

"Shall we drape them with a veil of cloth, Brother?"

"No need to cover them, my sisters. Women from India are free in our country."

They're religious and seated cross-legged in the lotus position for the lotus design in lavender on black cotton they dye with acorns that makes black. The lotus slip is their devotional calling card. It is beautiful. It's not just the slips being crafted; it's the women they connect you to.

In the great chronicle of comings and goings and migratory treks, the designer-slip crafters are not just another arrival. It is a voyage only made possible through untold sacrifice. They have dreamed of this voyage since they were young girls working in India's cotton mills. There are few places left in the world with such strong ties between religion, tradition, color, and textiles. Now in the spring, their window is opening. Their dream is the perfect example of why Snow Berry Woman should have broken a new trail to find her independence

The Return of Lesbian Pulp Fiction
Author uses Novel to Revive Cult Genre of Mid 20-th Century.

Sage Sweetwater revives lesbian pulp fiction in her new novel The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler. The novel jaunts through time to tell the stories of nontraditional women and their struggle to live their lives among the warm embrace of Mother Nature.

Set deep in the forest of Lac du Flambeau, Wis., the novel is told through the spirit of the loon with a hint of lesbian fairytale. In the woods of this beautiful land, sprites and magical creatures frolic and torment while the loons dance and transform on the pristine waters of the lakes and rivers. The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler is a woman raised with a deep respect for nature and the skills to survive on the fringes of modern society. She slips her canoe into the water, floats supplies up and down the river and taps maple trees for their syrup. Her lesbian counterpart Fringe Water Many Bosom, lives in the 1800s; a true pioneer woman. Her story mirrors Buckskin's and exhibits what life may have been like for her.

Metaphorically, (she reminds) us of a loon's wing which has not 'properly' aligned, society waiting for her to molt her feathers hoping her new ones will come in 'straight.'

The novel follows exploits of Buckskin and her home, the Hamlet of Winonah, an all-female colony inhabited by a feminist tribe patterned after the ancient Hopewell culture. This modern-day colony is on the remote side of the woods where the Province of Blige, a Celtic, post-card Ireland, enchants the world around them. Buckskin makes her way between the two as she learns to live the life she wants and grows comfortable in her own skin.

A captivating pulp novel, The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler is a unique mix of lesbian fiction, fairytale, and Native American mythology.

Professional Reviews
The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler
The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler, by Sage Sweetwater, was my first experience in reading lesbian literature. What I found was a writer who crafted a tale on many levels. A reader of this book will find historical Native American lore, romance, a Fairytale and a trip to a fantasy world that the author makes as real as the character's she pens in this work.

As an author of Native American historical fiction, I appreciated the native voice given to Buck Skin Oar Traveler. The sensibilities, lore and mannerisms were all dead on. Sage Sweetwater gives voice to her characters with passion, humor and in a storyteller's voice. I could picture myself in her lodge, listening to her tell the story as she boiled down Maple sap for syrup and Maple sugar.

Intimacy is set up by the author in such a way that the reader will be drawn in by the scenery, sensitivity and passion of those involved. I could hear the "pish, pish" from under the courting blankets and imagine the scene and almost felt guilty as if I were a voyeur watching from close by. Almost felt guilty...

Sage Sweetwater has written a fine novel that deserves a place on all bookshelves. Her writing was a performance that this reader was sorry to come to a close. I could read her works without tiring. The transformations from chapter to chapter were a lesson taught and built upon in the ensuing chapters. I will recall this story from my mind for many years to come, every time I smell or taste maple syrup, or catch the glimmer of a spoon lure under the water.

Well done, well done.

The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler
Sweetwater's novel is a magical blend of fantasy, Native American, Celtic and other mystical samples of lore that highlights her poetic talents as a unique Storyweaver. The strength of her creative current quickly immerses the reader into this tale. I'm convinced this author is the Queen of detailed imagery and prophetic prose! The story glides back and forth in time, and is almost surreal in a supernatural way. The reader will also discover a different brand of female erotica told through the voices of her spiritually rich Native American characters. I especially found myself mesmerized by the fact that I could almost taste the flavor of 'Crazy Loon' and Black Bear' coffee!

A delicious testament to Loons, Lesbians, Maple Syrup and Muskrat Love, September 7, 2009
By W. Joyce White "Joyce White" (Belleville, Illinois) - See all my reviews

Sage Sweetwater's The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler, is the poetic testament of a 26 year old woman who "steers her life with the help of two oars, nourishes it with maple sugar and spoon lures.." Sage writes. It is a story of a woman who loaded her birch-bark canoe like a delicatessen, making stops all along the the river to unload her bounty. "Greed," she writes, "can empty a forest of large life and tiny life, placing heavy emphasis on wildlife, tree life, and human villages." Sage is a wonderful storyteller interlocking metaphors with the knowledge of the past.

Her book wraps medieval pixie dust in shimmering mica and gives us definitions in a fairy encyclopedia. She paints fairies on her oars and chases them up and down the river in her mind. I like the way she tells how trees have hidden powers. To the Ojibwa, all trees had souls A living or green tree was never cut down, believing it could experience pain. They even rub healing lanolin on the spot where they tapped holes for their sap to run into their buckets.

This book is like a present for the senses. What you taste, smell, and imagine can fill you up deliciously. She compares her own sexuality with the gayness of loons as they ride on each other, spilling flesh, cleavage, and passion onto each other. This is a love story that goes on beneath blankets, out of sight of the narrow-minded men who just can't imagine why a woman would prefer another woman? "A relationship based on love is one in which each partner allows the other to be what she chooses with no expectations and no demands," writes Sage. A must read again for me. So much to digest. So much to think about.
