"I can guide you and all then, guv. You're just on the wrong side of the Common, ain't you then? Right. Nuffing to proper worry about, is there? Nah. The fog is a right pea souper for sure. Would you like me to walk along with you and show you the way? Won't be a bother at all then it won't. Me Granddad ain't come along just yet, he ain't."
"Would you then? How kind. I would be ever so grateful. How is it that you are able to get about in this murk? My wife must think me lost..."
"I live here, mate, I know this whole area like me own yard and all, I do. Just walk along here then, Sir. We'll cut right across the Common, we will. Have you home to the missus and your nice hot supper in no time."
Turning, the two began inching along the pathway extending from Eversholt Street through The Common and onto Melton Street. Lime Kiln lay jst beyond where Netherby and Prince Edward meet.
Shining his light on the pathway so Edwards might see his way better, the guide led his prey deeper into the murky darkness enveloping The Common.

London is snagged under one of its worst "pea-souper" fogs. Beneath the purblind mist emerge insidious forces: a self-centered player contemplating gruesome murder; a band of petty criminals recruited to carry out the ambitions of a corrupted authority; a wife disappearing under mysterious circumstances. The stage is set for the investigation of a lifetime for the husband of the missing woman, Chief Inspector Patrick Edwards.
The Inspector's Wife is a mystery brimming with tantalizing plot-twists and duplicity. There is sublime, even outrageous evil at work in this fiction, yet Hollingshead's description is respectful to the feelings of sensitive readers as she artfully avoids sensationalized graphic detail. The climate is enjoyably gothic, the supporting characters genteel in that tea-and-biscuits manner cherished by fans of old-fashioned mysteries. Edwards is a an upright man who pursues his case(s) with utmost professionalism, even as his personal stakes in this story are reasonably foremost in his agenda. The defects of the villains are effective and believable. The heroes -Edwards and his wife- are not simple abstractions of polite society but an amiable and down-to-earth wedded couple. It is this credible contrast of dynamics between good and evil that whets and keeps the reader's fascination from the first page to the last.
Readers who are not fans of quaint vernacular might find the lingo obscure at times, but the storyline is satin-smooth and the technical aspects of the police investigation never "over the head". The Inspector's Wife is a tastefully stylish page-turner, sure to leave the reader eager for more from the talented pen of m j hollingshead.

The Inspectors Wife

This mystery has some good characters who do draw you into the story although I found the colloquial speech kind of distracting at times. There are several plot lines which the author flips between. At the start it is kind of confusing but it does all sort it self out soon. Each story line (which does tie together -well- at least mostly and in a rather round about way) I was quite put out when one seemingly major story line ends rather abruptly and for no reason making me wonder what was the point of that character anyway. Overall a good effort but some flaws. Try it especially if you like Scotland Yard and that stiff upper lip, pip pip, cheerio stuff.

I am not the most serious mystery buff, but this one certainly kept me wanting more as I just couldn't figure out who really did it in this 'who done it'. Great reading for Halloween! !

| I read this multi-ploted book from cover to cover. What is they say, "A page turner?"Jumping between plots is a gimmick of mine. Molly, you've stolen my style? Of course I jest. The dated colloquial dialog was different. Though I couldn't figure out the vintage, I found it likable, and I adjusted quickly. Molly claims she writes cozy mysteries then offers you a married Casanova with three children who kill his mistresses when they get pregnant. Then blames them because they got pregnant and thinks he's justified. Like it was their duty to prevent their pregnancy. I don't remember precisely now but, counting the fetuses, I believe the number was more than a dozen. At times you fear for his wife's life. However, you will be pleased when a villain stops to help a motorist fix a tire and gets a knife stuck into his evil throat. Then, I spent several minutes figuring out, in the absence of explicit identification, whodunit. When I talked to Molly about the book she told me I'd guessed right. You read the book. See if you can figure it out. She'll disarrange your mind with all those plot twists. Well, I won't babble anymore. Will the Inspector's Wife escape the lethal hands of the bent copper? You'll have to discover that yourself. I'm sworn to secrecy. Enjoyed the read. (Reposted) |
