Only fate itself can determine which man will win Neeta's love, or will fate and time steal her away from them both?
Chapter Ten (July 1778)
The village seemed alive to Neeta and the people appeared real. There were no touristy attractions, no signs of coke machines. Where in God's name was she and what was going on? Had she died and this was Heaven or some in-between place? She kept those questions to herself not wanting the handsome brave walking beside her to think that she'd lost more than her memory. To think that she'd lost her mind. Maybe she had.
"Kanuga, forgive me but who exactly are you?" she asked now.
Kanuga looked into her eyes and said gently, "I am your intended. We are soon to be married."
Neeta felt as though the ground had shifted beneath her feet.
"Married?" she squeaked. "When?"
He was certainly a hunk but she wasn't ready to marry him or anyone else for that matter.
"We will celebrate the ceremony on the anniversary of your birth, August twelfth."
"Kanuga, what day is it?" she asked.
"The seventh month with twenty moon rises passed."
Neeta thought quickly. That was only about three weeks from her birthday! Come on guys, someone had to be playing a major trick on her. No way could any of this be real. No way was she going to marry anyone in three weeks. She was getting out of this looney-bin and going home, these people were nuts. That was it! They must be some kind of a cult. She'd been kidnapped and they were trying to brainwash her. Hard to believe someone as nice as Kanuga could be in on such a thing though. Maybe he'd been brainwashed too.
The cabin looked solid and well-made. It even had three rooms where as most of the others she'd seen in the village only had one big room or two little ones.
"It's lovely Kanuga," she said looking around. "Whose is it?"
"It's ours, I built it for us," he said proudly. He led her through the rest of the cabin. Then he showed her the last room.
"What is this room for?" Neeta asked.
Our what! Children? Oh my God, did they even have birth control in this time? She certainly wasn't ready to start having babies. Wait a minute; was she seriously thinking of marrying Kanuga? Was she crazy?
"Amoneeta, Little Bird. Look at me," Kanuga whispered softly.
He'd taken to calling her that lately. Said it suited her. She raised her head and her gaze locked upon his mouth. He had beautiful lips, very sexy. She wondered what it would be like to be kissed by them.
Kanuga gazed down at his bride-to-be. She was so beautiful. Slowly his arms came around her, pulling her into his embrace and just as slowly his lips descended to meet hers. The touch, at first gentle, soon kindled the fire within him and then he kissed her with all the love and longing he'd held inside. Great Spirit how he wanted her!
Neeta was shocked at the feelings within her. Never had a man's kiss made her feel such things. She didn't even realize that her arms clasped Kanuga to her as tightly as his did her. It was as if her body had a mind of it's own and it knew what it wanted. Kanuga.

Tooni was becoming annoyed. "Times running out Amoneeta. If you marry me, one day you'll be wife of a chief when I replace my father, Chief Oocumma. What will you be if you marry Kanuga? Just another squaw!" He nearly spat the last at her.
"I'm not so sure I'm going to marry anyone!" she snapped over her shoulder as she turned to leave. She'd had about enough of this Tooni. The next thing she knew, he grabbed her shoulder and spun her around.
"You don't have a choice. The only thing an unmarried squaw is good for is whoring. If that's what you want you can start practicing right now!"
Neeta dropped the water vessel as he jerked her against him. Before she knew his intent, he'd trapped her arms behind her back with one hand and his free hand was up her dress.
"Stop it!" she cried struggling against him.
He paid her no mind as he tried to kiss her. Remembering the little bit of self-defense she'd been taught, she stomped his foot as hard as she could and when he released her hands in surprise, she quickly kneed him in the groin.
Tooni yelped and bent over in pain. "You'll pay for that," he ground out.
