“The woman or man who is a poet, or fiction writer, or playwright, or all of these, is engaged constantly in a jazz ballet of vocabularies, passions, genders, histories, perspectives, death, love, and life. The music of revelation announces itself to the reader in somber brooding tones or in melodies light as air and one is invited to dance with the most captivating of partners: poetry. VISIONS OF A SKYLARK DRESSED IN BLACK is therefore presented as a freely styled dance with readers. It is a dance that rocks to the jubilations, blues, testimonies, nightmares, heartbeats and loveshouts of one creative consciousness spinning and hovering to the music of its own extraordinary flight between dimensions of fantastic being.”

Excerpt

A SHORT WORD WITH THE AUTHOR:
"The title for my latest book, VISIONS OF A SKYLARK DRESSED IN BLACK, is very descriptive of the book’s metaphysical substance and character. The stories in it may be viewed as painted meditations on the human condition, and the poems described as word portraits of life as we live it on the inside of our dreams and on the outside of our nightmares. They include striking profiles of such celebrated individuals as Coretta Scott King, Gordon Parks, Jack Kerouac, and Langston Hughes. Themes range from classic flights of love’s transcendent splendor to modern-day challenges of war, social harmony, and individual self-empowerment. In these pages myth and reality fuse to make VISIONS OF A SKYLARK DRESSED IN BLACK a uniquely unforgettable reading experience."
--A Skylark Dressed in Black

Professional Reviews
SAVANNAH POET AND SPOKEN WORD ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2006
“Not only a topflight journalist—for example, co-authoring the outstanding Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance––but an acclaimed poet as well, published in ESSENCE Magazine and author of I Made My Boy Out of Poetry.”
--CONNECT SAVANNAH NEWS MAGAZINE

A SATISFYING FEAST OF FICTION AND POETRY
“VISIONS OF A SKYLARK DRESSED IN BLACK is a satisfying feast of fiction and poetry featuring a novella and literary tributes to such celebrated icons as as Coretta Scott King, Langston Hughes, Jack Kerouac, Gordon Parks, and the great city of New Orleans. This long-awaited title is Aberjhani’s first since the 2003 release of Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance.”

INSPIRED PROPHETIC HOPES
“Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black offers an extraordinary flight through rich legacies of the past and inspired prophetic hopes for the present and the future.”

I bought it and read it. Not only is VISIONS OF A SKYLARK DRESSED IN BLACK a poetic banquet of Aberjhani delicacies, it's also a walk through his mind, loves, heartaches, and losses. I enjoyed the journey, even the difficult climbs. Furthermore, I like the convenience of the electronic book format. It's so easy to maneuver back and forth from favorite piece to more favorite piece. Nevertheless, I hope to see this gem in hard print one day. There are still a few places computers cannot go. :-) ~~Nordette
