Ever wonder what an out-of-body experience would feel like? Victor Farrell did and aimed to explore the possibilities to the fullest. That is, until, while delving into it, he unleashes the contents of a paranormal Pandora’s Box, which leads to his own physical and psychological torment at the hands of a vile and demonic entity.
I Have to Hurt You begins on the rain-soaked streets of Toronto where Farrell experiences the return of a childhood psychic ability at a time of desperate need. The story takes him to Calgary, Montreal, and points in-between, where he takes the reader on a wild ride across the astral plane.
It’s a ride worth taking as he tells the story as if he’s sitting across from you sharing a glass of Crown Royal. The magic comes in Farrell’s ability to make the mysterious comprehensible. He provides a window to the world of auras, yoga, and the astral plane. It allows the reader to share in those ideas...and Farrell’s terror.
He has a good eye for detail and shares the right ones to move the story forward. At one point he realizes entities cannot pass through electric fields so he constructs a defence based on that reasoning. It works...for a bit. At another point, he wonders why his harassment stopped while at a show in a casino in Las Vegas. Then he realized cats, in this case show cats, are extremely sensitive and would freak out at the sight they would see. Farrell silently appreciates the “discretion” the entity showed by staying away from him at the performance. Both these examples illustrate the depth of knowledge he has in the area.
The story moves along at a good pace and builds to several peaks of excitement before the final resolution. Along the way we share in the frustration of this beleaguered protagonist as he struggles to stay one step ahead of his invisible sick stalker. Each time he finds some measure of relief the entity is back. It gives being driven to drink a whole new meaning, as you’ll see when you read the book
So often books tackling this subject reach beyond their grasp. Not in this case. Instead of melodramatic, sweeping vistas of paranormal poetics, Farrell tells us about a former car salesman who deals with some really bad business. The charm comes in the simplicity and clarity of this work. It’s a book you could read in one sitting, and well worth the effort.
