How To Care For Skunks And Outwit Critters Humanely
(Spring 1997 issue) Kenneth B. Haas, D.V.M. reviews books for the "Wildlife Rehabilitation Today" magazine and for Coconut Creek Publishing, who sells Share's books.

This rehabilitation book is restricted to the skunk. It considers whether skunks make good pets (for most people, NO), the basics of rescue, quarantine, rehabilitation, health problems, and release.

The title and the author's name (Share "Stinky" Bond) are humorous. The name of her organization is inventive (S.K.U.N.K.S. = Society of Kind Understanding and Not Killing Skunks), published by Scratch 'n Sniff Publications (at P.U. Box 500128). But after the title page, the book is all business.

SKUNKS is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and relocating orphaned and injured skunks. They place unwanted pet skunks, work with individuals and groups, educate the public, run a 24-hour telephone emergency service, train individuals in orphan care, place skunks with trained rehabilitators, publish a quarterly newsletter, and have a "Little Stinker Club" newsletter for children.

The book begins with the baby skunk and gets right into "Finding A Right Veterinarian". Skunks need check-ups, vaccinations, and dewormings. It would be a good idea to give your veterinarian a copy of the book. Risks to the rehabilitator (common to all animals) are mentioned, record keeping is emphasized, as well as the forms presented to do it.

There is a wealth of information on feeding, litter box training, how to enrich a skunk's life (or suffer the consequences as it manufactures its own entertainment), and how to skunk-proof a room (or else). It also considers skunk discipline (careful), grooming, foods (never cat food), vaccination (all six canine vaccines), and killed rabies vaccine. Skunks are "living, breathing, walking hosts for roundworms" and a deworming schedule is recommended.

Reader Reviews for "Stinky Business: How To Rehabilitate Skunks"

A wildlife rehabber friend of mine has this book and raves about it saying it is her skunk bible. I am going to buy her your latest 4th edition so she will have your most updated work. I am sure she will be pleased.

I ordered this book almost ten years ago but whish I had it 10 years before that. I tell everyone who even want to get a skunk for a pet to buy the book first and then see if they still want one. I call it my Skunk Bible. The book is packed full of very useful information. I'm so glad Share wrote it and made it easy to read, so even a novice owner will get a lot out of it. This book is very useful for wildlife rehabbers too. I give this book a A++++++ rating

I know the person who professionally reviewed this book and trust his judgement. This isn't a book that I can use, but I know other people that would put this to good use.
