A non-fiction history book, by local black author and publisher, Fannie Minson Hudson. The “History of New Smyrna Black Businesses” (With Present Area Businesses) is about the accomplishments and contributions of the Black citizen of New Smyrna, Florida, from the late 1800s though the early 1960s and beyond.
As newly freed slaves starting out with little or nothing they overcame many obstacles to become productive business owners, business managers, landowners, humanitarians, pioneers, and upstanding members of the community.

It is a known fact that, not all slaves were blacks; not all blacks were slaves; some were born free, others bought their freedom, yet many more had no way out and remained slaves. Just like the butterfly in the cocoon before metamorphosis, these great people attained in one or two generations what it has taken other cultures many generations to accomplish. This book is not a attempt to point fingers at anyone, neither to cause pain or shame, but to tell things as they really were and are today.
