Is it possible to take a tour of New York City’s famed Harlem Renaissance way down in Savannah, Georgia? It is when you learn just how much of the celebrated Renaissance got its cultural start in the South.
Discussions on the Great Northern Migration of African Americans out of the South during the first half of the Twentieth Century often focus on what the millions of migrants escaped, or left behind. What they took with them was as least as important and crucial to the creation of the Harlem Renaissance, a movement which today still drives artistic creations, political movements, and social philosophies.
Excerpt
“Because Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk was published 20 years prior to the start of the Harlem Renaissance proper, one of the first acknowledged literary masterpieces of the cultural movement was Jean Toomer’s Cane. Published in 1923, Cane was largely the result of a temporary teaching position that Toomer held in Sparta, Georgia, for the summer of 1922. Toomer used his observations of interracial relationships and biracial offspring (which he was himself) to construct in Cane a powerful metaphorical portrait of America’s paradoxical proclivity for violent racial conflict and romantic interracial interaction.”

FIVE-STAR REVIEW ON AMAZON
On the Enyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance (Facts On File): “The writing is superb. The passages are about 1-4 pages each, and they confront the reader with the snap, crackle and pop of concise, crisp journalistic prose. The authors have a knack for deepening knowledge while causing the reader to want to know even more about the topic. The portraits tend to be descriptive without being judgmental, which adds credibility to the passages and force to the general topic. At the same time, the authors seem psychologically savvy, providing internally consistent life histories in many instances. There's a phenomenal amount of information here about remarkable people and places. The scholarship appears to be quite good, with helpful references following each passage.”
