The Bankrupt Spirit is an inspirational debut work by Christian author Vivi Monroe Congress, confronting a far too common inner state of being known as Spiritual Bankruptcy. This book goes the distance, fueled by the wisdom of Jeremiah 1:10, on a journey to disclose, disable and destroy the catastrophic effects of spiritual bankruptcy which denies us our divine inheritance of spiritual, physical and financial well-being. Financial terms are cleverly integrated to parallel the bondage (debt) that occurs when there’s a state of brokenness in our ability to draw upon our faith account in the Word (or bank) of God and how one can overcome by employing the life skills proposed through the wisdom of God.

Bankrupt(cy) represents the state of broken-ness in the ability to draw upon (ones’ faith account in) the Word (or Bank) of God. We may, many times, find ourselves bankrupt emotionally, mentally, and even physically based on a host of events that touch our lives, but before going any further, I must emphatically stress that God is the one true debt reliever in each and any instance. He, alone, can liquidate and reorganize our spiritual insufficiencies and He holds the keys that unlock the doors that offer to completely restructure our circumstances.
Be reminded that the principles shared in this book in no way guarantee perfection of character, but instead challenge your will to create a foundation that supports your spiritual structure, whether it be a “new construction” or a “renovation”, and deter (further) damage to it or the precious contents housed within.
Where there’s a state of broken-ness, there’s undoubtedly been a severing between at least two sources that are designed to respond positively to and feed one another for maximum effectiveness of each. Often, in a marriage, one or both persons may fail to respond to and feed the other adequately enough to heighten the effectiveness of the union and what results is a break in communication, intimacy or the marriage itself.
Similarly, and by no means in comparison to a failed marriage, a kitchen appliance simply fails to work properly when it’s not being fed by AND responding positively to it’s electrical supply source. So, when broken-ness or bankruptcy is present in your spirit, somewhere along the way (and you may even know when it occurred) you became separated – or got lost – from your spiritual supply source. And in order to operate at optimum capacity as you were designed to do, you have but one option and that’s to re-connect; reinvest what’s left of your spiritual account in a plan that can’t lose.
“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need”
– Hebrews 4:16

Midwest Book Review
The debut self-help book by Christian author Vivi Monroe Congress, The Bankrupt Spirit: Principles For Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks deals with the common inner state of being she calls "spiritual bankruptcy". Drawing upon the wisdom of Jeremiah 1:10, The Bankrupt Spirit shows how to identify and deal with the catastrophic effects of life events and problems that can damage our divine inheritance of spiritual, physical, and financial well-being. Financial terms are aptly integrated to parallel the bondage (or debt) that occurs when there is a state of brokeness in our ability to draw upon our "faith account" in the Word (or bank) of God and how Christian men and women can overcome life adversities by applying life skills secured through the wisdom of God. The Bankrupt Spirit is an excellent addition to any Christian Living reference collection or Christian Inspirational Studies supplemental reading list.
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
A bankrupt spirit is a spirit that has been broken by life's trials and tribulations. Author Vivi Monroe Congress states how grief and misery manifests in our lives and how well we deal with these things is totally dependent on our response to the situation. In other words, it is imperative to keep everything in perspective. When we continue to dwell in a downtrodden state, this affects God's creditworthiness in the eyes of our naysayers. It also reiterates the fact that as a Christian believer, we should steadfastly praise God despite the circumstances.
In THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT, Congress adeptly cites many Biblical references throughout the text to positively enforce her message of having a motivatal outlook. She reminds us that during challenging times, it is imperative that we keep our spiritual guard up and break the chains of bondage that steal away our joy. God doesn't give us more than we can bear, therefore, we must trust Him to see us through our valley experiences. To break the bonds of spiritual bankruptcy, we must first get real with ourselves by unearthing all of our bad habits and negative influences. As stated in Jeremiah 29:11, God wants us to prosper. He gives us hope and arms us with a plan for the future.
In THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT, Congress takes us on a journey from spiritual bankruptcy to spiritual wealth and healing, by providing a systematic approach of realization, acceptance and growth. The flowing manner in which she writes will immediately draw the reader into her message and will cause reflection. One thing I especially liked was that a summary listing of all the scriptures quoted in the text was provided in the end. In my opinion, this is a wonderful study tool to utilize when examining the scriptures for yourself. No matter the denomination or Christian affiliation, THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT will be a blessing to its readers.
