New Frontiers

Paul felt the hair on his neck stand up. He shifted his weight onto his back leg as if ready to spring out of the way. His eyes squinted slightly as if trying to focus on something far in the distance.
Mary’s fingers dug into his arm. If he didn’t have long sleeves she defiantly would draw blood.
Paul could not take his eyes off the moon growing larger in front of him as the small craft sped closer to the surface at an incredible speed.
As the craft flew closer the butterflies in Paul’s stomach felt as if they were beginning to swarm. Every hair on his body was standing at full attention, trying to warn him to scream stop at the top of his lungs, yet he could not move. He just stared at the growing moon in front of him in sheer amazement.
The moon changed from a yellow glowing sphere into a black and gray wall.
As they moved closer blurred details began to focus defining mountains and craters. Paul began to make out rock formations devoid of any life. It looked so desolate.
Jeremy slowed the craft and maneuvered it within a few feet of the surface. Moving like a snake around the rough terrain. He smiled remembering the first time he had made the trip and the excitement that he felt.
Paul saw something in the distance he strained to see it stretching his neck pushing his head as far forward as he could to try to make out what it is.
As the craft moved closer Paul suddenly realized, “It’s the lunar Lander!” He exclaimed.
“The flag!” Mary said pointing.
“That is the Lander from Apollo 16, John Young, Tom Mattingly and Charles Duke.” Jeremy told them. “They landed there in April 1972.”
Paul shot a smile toward Jeremy then looked back at the surface of the moon.
The area they were flying over now looked like the dull side of aluminum foil that has been wadded up and flatted back out.
Paul noticed that the craft had picked up speed. He began to see a dark line that spanned the entire length of the moon. Beyond the line there were no stars only blackness.
As the craft crossed the line they were enveloped in darkness, until suddenly, stars, millions of stars.
Paul looked around the sky. He had never seen such an amazing display of stars, even the pictures he has seen did not compare to the scene that had unfolded in front of him.
Paul’s attention was suddenly caught by something emerging over the horizon of the moon. He strained and focused his eyes, trying to figure out what it is.
A long bullet shaped object…“A ship” Paul muttered under his breath. He felt Mary’s grip tighten on his arm as she realize what she was seeing.
