A questionable accident claims the lives of Colbi West's parents, and she blames her family's opulent lifestyle for the tragedy. Angered by unnecessary risks money can buy, she sets aside a promising law career and leaves Michigan to outrun emotional pain. When the road east ends at the ocean in North Carolina, she meets two women who encourage her to stay in Locus Point and open a wildlife rehabilitation shelter. Although ignorant of the field, Colbi's notion of a simpler life in the south and the gentle prodding from her new acquaintances over pie persuade her to stay. Her new life in the sleepy coastal town becomes problematic when value systems collide, and she realizes more needs saving than pelicans and opossums. Faced with unexpected and distressing complications, her tendency to run again is caged by a promise made she will not break, even if it means going to jail.

Excerpt

Quotes from "Save Them All"

Colbi - "I'd be a fool not to admit there's danger in loving something or someone too much, but I'd be a bigger fool not to choose living dangerously"

Colbi - "Although I'm quick to hold people accountable for most of the disruption, pain and trauma wildlife endures, knowing these animals need me, someone who cares whether they are here or not, forces me to retain my sanity in the midst of the ugly chaos only humans are capable of."

Grams - "While others may pull up the tent stakes and walk away, you have this grace and fierce courage about you, unlike anybody I've ever seen."

Professional Reviews

Carolyn Alford - Columnist, Jacksonville, NC Daily News
"The animal stories from the Down East center are all there for us animal lovers, but there is so much more: drama, mystery, violence, romance, friendship. 'Save Them All' is pure Linda, a well-written book with a lot of depth and passion."

Nancy Tripp King, Award Winning Poet and Author of “Tobacco Blossoms and The Pulled-Tight Twine
“Linda Bergman-Althouse’s book, Save Them All, lingers with me long after I have placed it in its alphabetical order on my bookshelf of ‘Keepers.’ It wasn’t just that I learned so much about the nature of wild creatures (despite my growing up on a farm), it wasn’t just the easy flow of extensive events nor the ease of the dialogue and interactions between this northern transplant and all those southerners, who she portrayed with such justice and kindness; nor was it the complicated love triangle focused on Colbi, her lead character. It was the way this author dealt with prickly situations. I, as a reader, fell in love with Elliot, the ‘older’ doctor who befriended Colbi when she first came to Locus Point, and did not want him hurt. I began to wonder how she was going to handle my heart if he became the ‘one-not-chosen.’ The writer in me struggled with the notion that if she rejected and, therefore, hurt him, I would dislike this Linda Bergman-Althouse. Sometimes, we just need to take luxurious pleasure in love found within the pages of a book. Linda, with the ease and generosity that, I think, is her trademark, let love happen on a ride running the gamut of emotions. This, and her expertise with plot and character, allowed me to wallow in this wonder called ‘Love.’ And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes Linda Bergman-Althouse’s Save Them All a keeper.”

Debi Rutkowskee, Poet, Lyricist & Freelance Writer
Save them All is very intriguing and certainly has a number of interesting characters. There's a lot of information in this book I did not know before, it's wonderful to get it in story form.

Reader Reviews for "Save Them All"

Reviewed by Michael Guy 4/2/2008
This looks like it may be a good read for my summer vacation this year in Vermont (I live in Florida) I moved inland a year ago from the beach and I'm getting to hate it. Do you live near the outer banks? I particularly fond of doing anything to help animals especially shore related (they are under even greater stress.) I've rescued many a sea-bird and taken them to rehabilitators in Daytona Beach. (I used to be a fisherman) I miss the world you are probably a part of daily... I'll check Amazon unless you can rec. where I can get it cheaper (almost broke writer/musician)
Best of luck, michael guy
