How to Have a Rich, Healthy Life - Without the Sacrifice

Die Healthy: Pursuing the Dream of Wellness and Longevity

There are numerous diet and fad health books that come out these days. Ranging from the South Beach Diet to Atkins to the Perricone Prescription and beyond. Each of these "health" based plans focus primarily on the diet of the individual and methods for rapidly losing weight or reducing cholesterol. Not much else. It's too bad, since diet is really only one component of a healthy individual - behavior, environment, breathing, exercise, and family bonds all play a role in the overall health of an individual. It is with this background that I cautiously approached the book Die Healthy by Canadian Lorraine Mignault.

What a surprise then, as I delved into the more than 15 years of research that Lorraine presents in her book. This is not simply another book offering up yet another fad-based diet plan. Nor does it propound another health based lifestyle that makes you only eat grapefruit or sprouted grains. Rather, in Die Healthy, Lorraine presents a very simple, easy to follow proprietary system based on a combination of French and Ayurvedic principles. Combining the best of the French lifestyle - its love of good, quality food - with the scientific principles of Ayurveda - the ancient Indian mind-body-spirit way of being - Lorraine leads the reader through several Wellness Capsules.

The Wellness Capsules are Lorraine's ingenious way to present the rich scientific backing for the lifestyle advice offered in this book. The first Capsule explains why other diets fail. Wellness Capsule two documents the simple MASTERPIECE MEALS™ program which is focused on water, whole grains, vegetables, quality dairy, and some nuts, poultry, fish, and eggs. What I really liked were what Lorraine has divided into Wellness Capsules three and four - where she focuses on teaching us how to do a self-assessment and how to take care of our "inner" and "outer" selves. The rest of the Wellness Capsules walk the reader through methods for bringing health into your environment, proper breathing techniques, and how to bring wellness - and ultimately longevity - into your daily lives.

There are many other components of this book that really struck a chord - the use of clear language, charts, and especially case studies. I've tried a lot of things in my life, but none of the various lifestyle diets have ever seemed really feasible. Well, in Die Healthy there is finally a lifestyle - not simply a dietary regime - that is presented and which is easily accessible. I've already adopted some of the practices mentioned in the book - especially those centering around the breath and the skin. This book is an invaluable resource and guide for anyone looking to improve their quality of life - today - without having to subscribe to a particular "diet". If you want to live well - and die healthy, then the material presented in this book should be at the top of your reading list.

When author, Lorraine Mignault, sent her newest book for review, expectations were up in the air here at the Wichita Natural Beauty examiner office. How much could a book that focuses on nutrition really tell us about skin care?

Apparently, quite a bit. Die Healthy Pursuing the Dream of Wellness and Longevity by Lorraine Mignault is a book about the author's research into how our current daily life affects everything human. From body function, to disease and our stress levels, it all comes back to how we treat our body which includes how we fuel it.

The beginning page includes a disclaimer by Lorraine stating that all research is her own and has not been conducted on behalf of anyone or any other company and includes independent research, client case studies and scientific research. Lorraine is a scientist and has achieved many "firsts" in the neutraceutical field, all of which can be seen at her website and in the back of the book.

The very first thing that catches the eye is the 3 page list of fad diets beginning in 1087 and ending in 2004, but it is the fourth chapter Your Outer Self, that is of most interest to this review. If you don't know what the body's largest organ is, you need to read this book. The human body's skin is responsible for not only holding our insides in, but for breathing oxygen and excreting toxins. According to this chapter (and many experts) whatever ails you on the inside will show through your skin.

The author discusses the differences between cultural reactions to health and wellness, mentioning that in North America people react to, rather than prevent skin issues. She also explains how with proper nutrition, you can improve your skin without the help of expensive over the counter or prescription cosmetics and skin care treatments. Also discussed in this chapter are dry brushing, natural clothing, natural shoes, and nail care, among much detailed information.

For this chapter alone, the book is worth reading, because not only does the author tell you how your diet affects what your skin looks like, she helps you understand how to remedy that with natural and easy to obtain changes. She never recommends a crash diet, or sudden full-stop changes to your diet or health care routines. The case studies were also enlightening because they demonstrate real people who eat and behave in much the same way as any one in your life does.

Die Healthy:Pursing the Dream of Wellness and Longevity
Die Healthy, Pursuing the Dream of Wellness and Longevity

This well-written book would be of use to any dietician, health professional or ordinary citizen who wants to improve his/her life and lifestyle.

Based on her research, Ms. Mignault believes that mismanaged insulin and blood sugar levels are the root causes of disease. And she highly endorses the French lifestyle of smaller, healthier meals enjoyed to the fullest, not gulped down in five minutes, as is so often the case in North America.

She explains in detail how what we eat affects our entire life…mental health, physical health, exercise, and breathing, for example. Ms. Mignault assails the government for its lack of concern for the health of the nation and not regulating the agricultural industry. The ag industry gets a bad rap for being concerned only with the big bucks. Health care professionals are chastised for wanting to take care of the sick, not the healthy.

There are many suggestions throughout the book to improve our lives, from the best foods to eat for better health and exercises for overall body improvement, to personal grooming tips and breathing exercises. Ms. Mignault concludes her book with her Masterpiece Meals™ pyramid and her Daily Dietary Intake and Lifestyle Treatment Master Plan™.

Die Healthy:Pursing the Dream of Wellness and Longevity
Reviewed by ANGELA JACKSON - The Aquarian

Die Healthy, written by Winnipeg health consultant, Lorraine Mignault, is a persuasive guide to improving your health through diet, proper breathing, exercise and other good health habits. Illustrated by anecdotal examples, it is authoritative, comprehensive and easy to read.

We're all going to die, but Mignault claims some ways are better than others. "The dream we all share," she writes, "is to live life to the fullest, be active and healthy right up to our last day and pass away peacefully, surrounded by the people we love." That's what she means by "Die Healthy."

At the beginning of the book, Mignault outlines some of the "bandwagon" diets that have become popular with the public over several decades and deals with the reasons they fell out of favour. In contrast, Mignault stresses that her advice is aimed at the improvement of all-over health and longevity, as well as appearance. She gives advice about breathing methods, increasing activity levels, skin care, what fabrics to wear, sleeping habits and environmental matters.

Skin brushing was new to me. It's done to remove dead skin cells and to improve circulation. "Use a long handled, natural, not synthetic, bristle brush that will not scratch," says Mignault. Always brush in circular motions towards the heart. Start with the soles of your feet and work your way up: do not include the face. This method, she claims, improves the look of the skin, removes dead skin cells and delays premature aging.

On the subject of snacks, Mignault recommends eating healthy ones like fresh fruit or vegetables or even half a tin of pineapple tidbits (in its own juice, no sugar added) instead of low-value foods like chips and cheezies. She outlines a "pyramid" of lifestyle choices to guide the reader towards a healthier way of living. The foundation of that pyramid is physical exercise. You can't just change your food habits and expect to feel healthy if you are not getting more active as well, Mignault claims.

In the month that I have been reading Die Healthy and practising Mignault's ideas, I have lost ten pounds, I sleep better and I have more energy. I am happy to recommend this book to anyone wanting to follow a healthier lifestyle.
