Fiction

She can keep her legs shut, but not her lips

Removed from active military duty, Helen clashes with her powerful newfound parent, Lord James Mordecai. During a visit to the Andros farm, the home of Helen's mother, one of Helen's caustic remarks pushes the duke to slap her. Judith Altair, best friend of Helen's mother, arranges a compromise.

Back in Shambhala, Helen asks her kinsman, Lord Justin Atlas, to help decode the pattern of chemicals she has found in samples from the blood of the Exalted Lord, Kefren.

Acting on Helen's advice, Lord Justin declares his love to Lord Matthew Shinar, Helen's best friend from her days at medical school. Lord Matthew returns Lord Justin's feelings.

Lord Justin's father, Prince Enoch, receives secret Temple historical documents containing explosive news about half-breeds and the relationship of one half-breed to the Toltecs' God-King, Kronos. He muses about the possibilities of using Helen once he and Lord James sign a marriage contract.

At the Consort's urging, her nephew, Lord Andrew Palladin, invites Helen to the First Blood ceremony for his newborn son. Helen begs to decline the invitation; Lord James insists that she attend. As a result, Helen is beaten unmercifully by order of the Holy One, head of the Temple of Kronos.

Recovering, Helen meets with Lord Matthew and Lord Justin, whose interpretation of the chemical sequence confirms her own suspicions. She devises a counteragent that brings Kefren out of his stupor. Although the letter from Helen’s mother enrages Kefren, Lord James appeases his monarch's anger and the two develop a political and legal defense strategy.

During a family gathering, Helen saves Lord Andrew from choking to death. Kefren finds out about an experimental procedure she has devised to help Lord Matthew and orders the academics at the Sacred Academy of Kronos, where Helen obtained her medical training, to discuss the merits of the approach and vote on it. Helen is allowed to go forward and finds a second physician to help her.

Right after the procedure, Helen reluctantly attends a gathering of officer school graduates at her father's manor. She makes an unthinking remark that violates military law. Just as he foresaw, Lord James' sense of duty to his office as Lord Protector compels him to discipline his daughter.

While Helen recovers, Maguari the Mist-Weaver reveals her life as Andros, the half-breed son of Kronos, urging Helen not to allow her anger to divide her from the same father in this life. Helen finally submits to her father's authority, although she still cannot yet call him "Papa."

Kefren orders Lord James and Prince Enoch to sign an accord binding Helen in marriage to Lord Justin. The union is a political move designed to bolster Lord James' standing.

Just before Lord James' trial begins, the Holy One unexpectedly orders Helen to be present at the proceeding. Watching her proud father plead for her yet unable to defend her, Helen has a change of heart and, just as Maguari urged, finds the courage to express it.

Excerpt

During lunch, Helen, regretting her rude rejoinder to her father’s friend, tried to be more outgoing. After the meal, the younger children left to play outdoors. Helen insisted that Abigail and Martha remain seated while she and her cousins washed the dishes.

“That kaf you served late last night was extraordinarily tasty, Abigail,” Lord James remarked.

Abigail glanced at Helen. “It was not of my making, my lord.”

“It was the lieutenant’s brew, my lord,” Orlando interjected. “She seems to have a talent for consistently making the best-tasting kaf I’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking.”

“I would welcome another cup, Lieutenant,” Lord James said.

Bristling where she stood in front of the sink, Helen did not trust herself to speak. Nodding, she went about preparing a pot, feeling demeaned, devalued, and demoralized. She had earned a scholarship to the Sacred Academy of Kronos, in itself no small accomplishment, given the institution’s rigorous academic requirements. Managing to remain there against all opposition, she even graduated at the top of her class after seventeen grueling years. Yet her ability to make good kaf was the only thing that seemed to elicit her father’s approval.

The machine launched its brewing cycle. Helen’s disappointment and anger simmered. Hot tears of hurt and frustration rolled down her cheeks. She wiped them away and turned back to the stacks of dirty dishes.

Alerted by Helen’s abnormal silence, Judith tuned into her energy. She felt the depth of Helen’s turmoil and the effort she was making to keep it under control. Judith became alarmed at the potential for open conflict.

The kaf ready, Helen set a mug in front of Orlando. “This is going to cost you, Colonel.”

He regarded Helen with an innocent air. I don’t doubt that for an instant. He lifted the mug as though saluting her, then put it to his lips and tasted the brew. “You’ve outdone yourself, Lieutenant.”

Unwilling to pay Helen a compliment, Lord Nimrod decided to lighten his client’s mood. “I almost didn’t recognize you earlier, James, without a uniform.”

Helen, tackling the last of the dirty pots and pans, imprudently joined the discussion. “Indeed, it made me wonder if perhaps the Lord Protector has retired from active duty.”

“I may not be in uniform, young woman, but I am still Lord Protector,” Lord James said. “I suggest you not forget that.”

“I may not be in uniform either, Lord Protector, but I am still the medical officer for the 163rd Regiment. Have you forgotten that?”

“Not anymore, Lieutenant. Your commission was changed to inactive status indefinitely. You will not be returning to military duty for some time, if ever.”

Helen dropped a pot into the sink. The clang silenced all talk and halted all activity.

“Any particular reason for this change, Lord Protector?”

“I have been making decisions about your future, and that was one of them.”
Helen bowed and shook her head. She hit the palms of her hands on the rim of the sink. She stomped on the tiled floor. She tried breathing deeply, counting to ten, everything she could think of to siphon off her raging frustration.

Finally she pivoted on her heel; he sat with his back to her. “That’s just the problem, Lord Protector,” she said. “You are making the decisions about my future.”

“That is my right, and my responsibility, young woman,” he replied. “Along with being your Supreme Commander, I happen to be your father.”

“My father. I have no father. A sperm donor, perhaps, but no father.”

Professional Reviews
Excellent Job (5 Stars)
I have to tell you right off, I usually do not review books in this genre, but author C.L. Talmadge has written a read that has kept my attention and drawn me into her series.

I would like to quote, if I may, her own words concerning it:

"Over several generations of strong female protagonists, the series explores how state sanction for exclusionary religious practices leads to the complete destruction of an island nation called Azgard. Throughout, the heroines and their mysterious green gem attempt to offer a healing, inclusive alternative to a government that persecutes those who do not look like or share the religious beliefs of its top leaders."

Our author describes her series as, "a blue-state version of 'end-of-the world' fiction without a traditional religious viewpoint. Instead, it examines alternative spiritual themes and sets forth a different interpretation of free will and good and evil."

In the first book of this series, "The Vision," I met Lt. Helen Andros, who is a physician with a gift for healing. Helen wears a green gemstone necklace from her mother with healing powers. Helen, however is a half-breed, and is treated with contempt in her land. She finds out she is the illegitimate daughter of Lord James, a powerful man in leadership.

In this second installment of this series, Helen and her father begin a battle of wits, each pulling against the other, in their ignorance of relationships. Their battle is long and fierce as they seek from each other, loyalty, compassion and finally love. It is not an easy road, and is filled with disturbing incidents as it is traveled. Many of the unfair acts done to Helen left me filled with rage, but her fortitude was amazing as she survived one obstacle after another. I enjoyed this installment in the series.

The author takes you deep into the life of Helen, both past and present, giving much more insight into her position and importance. The fierce struggle for power continues, those who were evil, becoming more so as the battle for complete dominion is paramount. It appears none are safe from the cruelty that reigns.

The story was both repulsive in the acts of the characters therein, but also heartfeltin devotion and love to those struggling for the good. The ending definitely left you wanting, and that is a good thing.

Exceptional job of writing, and keeping this story tightly together in a genre that is certainly difficult to do such, our author is top-notch. If you love an intense read, packed with sinister power seekers, grueling heartless characters, yet laced with mystical moments, the lure of peace and healing, and the hope that goodness will prevail, this read is for you. Excellent job.
