Embellishments
Glenda Sparling's Wrapped in Fabrique, assembles in one easy-to-read, well-illustrated package a wide range of machine-embroidered and appliqued surface treatments, and amounts to an admirable introduction to machine embellishment and fabric manipulation. Sparling starts with definitions of the basic terms, and describes the essential tools and materials. She then launches into a tutorial on the foundation techniques machine applique and free-motion machine embroidery. Most of the techniques that follow combine machine embroidery and manipulated fabrics to create small rectangles of texture and color which are then cut to shape and appliqued onto the background fabric. Techniques include various ways of puckering fabric with machine stitches or by pressing wrinkled fabrics to fusible web, manipulating and pin-weaving fabric strips, pin-tucking, creating new fabrics by stitching over water-soluble stabilizers, couching yarns, and working with padded fabric tubes. Each of the dozen techniques is accompanied by a quick example project, and the book winds up with a single project followed from start to finish. This is a valuable addition to the growing list of books covering these incredibly versatile machine techniques.

Wrapped in Fabrique
As fabric embellishing grows in popularity, sewing is spoken of more and more in art terms. fabric is the 'canvas', thread is the 'paint', and the sewing machine is the 'brush'. You'll see this metaphor used throughout the book. Author Glenda Sparling has coined her own term for embellishing: 'fabrique' (rhymes with applique). In this extensive reference, she covers a wide range of embellishments: applique, freehand embroidery, fabric amnipulation, pintucking and other stitch techniques, plus working with fabric strips, tubes and tunnels. The book's detailed table of contents almost serves as an index, so it's easy to turn right to a topic. You'll find the information well-organized. Sparling suggests where you might apply specific embellishments, lists mateials and supplies and presents step-by-step instructions, amply accompanied by how-to drawings. You'll see many garment and close-up photos throughout the book, plus two color sections that better portray eye-catching detail. The model garments, fashioned in rich fabrics and embellished with metallic and rayon threads, are gorgeous and glitzy. If that's not your style, envision how you might apply the techniques for a different appearance.
