Kendra Kandlestar

LOST IN A MAZE OF MYSTERY . . .

Everyone knows that the creatures of the outside world are forbidden by magic to enter the Land of Een. That’s why Kendra Kandlestar is so surprised when a giant Unger arrives in the middle of the night to deliver a cryptic message: if she can find the Door to Unger, she will be able to unlock the truth about what really happened to her long-lost family.

But when Kendra finds herself trekking through the wilderness with a magic-peddling faun and a rebellious Unger, she begins to wonder if it isn’t all just a clever trap to lead her into the heart of danger.

Excerpt

This is a story about monsters and mazes, and what it means to be lost. If you have ever been inside a maze, then you know that they do a very good job of making you lose your way. They are full of tricks and turns, and if you’re not careful, you will find yourself going in circles or headed down a dark road with no end.

There are still a few mazes left in our world—you may have found yourself inside one if you’ve ever wandered through a farmer’s cornfield or visited a palace garden. But really, there is nothing very frightening about these modern mazes, for they harbor no fanged goblins, no slurping monsters. But if you so lose yourself in this story, you just might discover such an adventure.

Professional Reviews

A Rich, Wonderful World for Preteens
Author and illustrator Fodi has a lovely way of spinning a funny, entertaining fantasy tale while weaving in important lessons. The Kendra books are a great choice for eight- to 12-year-olds who are ready to explore a rich, wonderful world of the imagination.

Kendra Kandlestar and the Door to Unger
Although it is a sequel, this book also stands alone. It would appeal to a variety of readers, including readers of fantasy and adventure stories. The ending certainly leads the reader to the conclusion that there will be more adventures for Kendra and her associates. This book would be an excellent class novel for individual reading or as a read aloud choice. It would be an excellent addition for personal, class, school and public libraries. Highly Recommended.

Kendra Kandlestar and the Door to Unger
This is the second Kendra Kandlestar book, but it definitely stands alone. This is a great adventure, full of excitement, creativity, logic, and lessons about judgment and prejudice. Well written, with interesting characters . . .I loved every minute of it, and I think you will too.
- Armchair Interviews, September 2007
