My first book published in 2006 covers many subjects, experiences and observations during the past 20 years. I've written about tragic events such as the Omagh bombing in 'Omagh(A Town Shattered)', the Dunblane massacre in 'Death of the Innocents'. There is also many happy and funny poems covering a wide range of subjects. I also include poems very personal to me, so it truly is a life of rhyme.

Cover Blurb

"In this volume of lively poems, David Harkins creates poetry out of the fabric of life. His verse, sometimes poignant and often humorous, takes as its subject the kind of everyday experiences that we all share and makes inspirational poetry from the commonplace.

Harkins' generous-spirited verse welcomes the reader into its world, offering gentle condolence or light-hearted distraction from the troubles encountered in life.

Whether you are a regular reader of verse, looking for a new poetic talent, or a curious novice who has never before read a book of poetry, A Life of Rhyme by David Harkins is sure to appeal."

Professional Reviews

Brilliant debut from David Harkins
When I first heard that David Harkins was in the process of putting together a collection of his poetry I asked if I could be amongst the first people to review it. I have been a fan of his since reading some of his early poems. I expected A Life of Rhyme to be charged with the passion of a man who has seen life and observed it from all its aspects. I expected it to burst from the page with the wit and wisdom of a man brought up in the industrial heartland of Scotland...I was not disappointed. A Life of Rhyme delivers exactly what it says on the cover. This fine blend of humour and pathos will take you in one minute back through the streets of your own childhood and in the next minute into the heart and mind of a man who has learned over time how to connect with his surroundings and to look for the light in every dark situation. This remarkable collection is fresh in form and style and honest in its uncompromising delivery. Harkins tells it like it was, like it is. and how it should be...poetry at its very best!

A Life of Rhyme - review
A life of Rhyme by David Harkins is an inspiring and thought provoking read, from the first page to the last, Harkins takes the reader on rollercoaster of life, which has you laughing and crying from page to page.

It's gritty realism pays homage to the writers meagre up bringing in a Glasgow tenement. David's `tell it how it is' style speaks volumes of his natural and honest integrity as a man and a writer.

The journey this book of poetry will take you on shall leave the reader inspired, thankful, humble and touched by it's innocence, wit and skill.

In conclusion, A life of Rhyme is a powerful yet highly entertaining and educational piece if literature that should not be missed by any aspiring poet or avid reader. A cracker in my opinion.

A Life of Rhyme by David Harkins is an inspiring and thought provoking read.

A Life of Rhyme by David Harkins
I really enjoyed this book and found when I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. Some of the verses were so funny while others made you sit up and realise that this was true life and could have been written by anyone. I feel that I know David personally after reading his book and think that he has been very brave to publish what are very personal poems. Well done David!
