We Heard the News
It was Howard Cosell's voice
Over the tail-end of a football game.
We sat for hours waiting to hear
That no, it wasn't.
We could not accept the telephones of the
world going haywire,
Tolling your death from coast to coast.
We were numb.
Flipping the dials and the knobs.
For a channel that would correct this mistake.
It was too late, they said.
And yes it was true
Definitely. No question.
It was you
who was dead...
and the joke was on you,
and on us.
Yes, there was the photograph.
But nobody laughed.
So it was final.
We did what we could - as we had in the past.
For Bobby and Jack and Martin. Now you.
For all the golden chosen ones
Taken with the ultimate bang,
The assassin's true believable unreason of lead.
What could we do but gather and weep?
How could we handle our grief?
We played you over and over and over
And over once more.
But this time your voice wasn't enough.
And never would be again.
Beatles Unlimited Magazine
This book is one that has to be treated in a completely different way than the usual stuff that is discussed inside this column. The author shared her innermost feelings and respect for John Lennon in this book, which is subtitled (sic) Letters from a Fan in NY City, and invites you to do the same. For this reason all left pages are empty so you can write down your own thoughts about the subject discussed on the right-hand page. It is, in effect, a very interactive book. Furedi's writings, letters and poetry overwhelmed me with similar feelings and thoughts. In chronological order John's life is taken a poetic flight in time, combined with touchy feelings and well chosen words. The author describes it in her forward as a loving tribute and that's exactly what it is. An extra dimension is given to the book by photos that she has taken of the area and from the Dakota building and the park on the other side of the road. (She is very privileged in that matter, while she lives pretty close to the Dakota and Central Park). Join fans Across The Universe with John Lennon: Log on to dearjohnlennon.com and share your work with friends of John Lennon around the world. The book is highly recommended to Lennon addicts.
