Shelley Walden's Bound by Hatred & Art

Imagine utter isolation and desperation intermingled with the basic human instinct to survive. The victim’s pleas are virtually silent, lost in the despair of domestic violence. This complex subject is explored through the main character, Angel, as she unknowingly finds herself in an abusive relationship. Angel’s internal dialogue is disclosed as she carefully navigates her way through domestic violence. She learns undeniable truth in the saying “Keep your enemies close” and this account will show the instrumental role it plays in survival. Angel finds inner strength as she resolves to outsmart a master manipulator with sociopathic tendencies. The hope is to inspire, provoke thought and clear misconceptions concerning abuse. It is crucial to promote better understanding as to why a victim stays and the need for reform. Follow Angel’s trials and tribulations as she travels the road to self-discovery.

Excerpt

I turned my head and noticed a guy approaching. He had piercing blue eyes and dark hair.
Mark smiled and said, “This is Damien.”
“Hi, Damien. Have a seat,” urged Amy.
Damien turned to me and asked, “Mind if I sit here?”
Once again I was taken back by his striking eyes. I quickly snapped
out of my trance and scooted over in the booth.
“And you are?” asked Damien as he gave me the once over.
Amy piped in, “This is my friend, Angel.”
There was an awkward pause as I tried to think of conversation. I was saved as a waitress came by to ask what we wanted to drink.
With Damien in such close proximity, I couldn’t help but notice he was tan and muscular. There was something about him that intrigued me. It was unusual, because he was definitely older than the guys I usually dated.

Professional Reviews

J. Lair's Review
Angel is a naive small town girl who moves to the city and finds herself entangled in an abusive relationship with a wretch of a man. Its further complicated when she becomes pregnant.
After having to lock herself and her toddler in the bathroom to escape his rage, she realizes she must find a way to escape.
Its a great fast read. I couldn't put it down!

V. Wood's Review
I couldn't wait to order my copy after reading some excerpts during the writing of Bound By Hatred. It is chilling, moving and revealing - a captivating read and testament to the strength of women and motherhood.

Reader Reviews for "Bound by Hatred"

Reviewed by Gail Deemer 4/30/2008
I wish domestic violence didn't exist but it does. Abuse isn't just physical but verbal as well. So many times, I thought I wasn't abused because he didn't hit me, I wasn't pushed up against the wall, I wasn't covered in bruises. I might as well have been. The verbal abuse I suffered in previous marriages and my childhood, all left the same scars on my psyche.

This sounds like a great book and I hope it deals with the subject in the open way it needs to be addressed.

Shelley, this sounds like a good book. I wish you all the best with it. Domestic violence is a subject near and dear to me, too. You might even like my unpublished novel on the subject. It's posted here on AD and called "Show Time." Terry
