We are a nation of home owners and constantly have plans for undertaking alterations to our own house or apartment. It may be that we have a growing family and need more space; or perhaps granny is coming to live with us or maybe we just would like something a bit more grand.
One could be forgiven for thinking that having secured the finance the rest would be fairly simple. Unfortunately this is not the case as alteration work with all the procedures, regulations, designers, contractors and subcontractor to contend with becomes something of a black art. Andrew Williams however has a talent for making the complex seem simple. His book takes the reader gently through the process leading up to securing planning permission. On the way he deals with problems relating to party walls, conservation areas, listed buildings and even tree preservation orders. Compliance with building regulations and understanding the complexities is no easy matter but Andrew manages to get the message across with consummate ease.
Andrew is in full swing when, using clear examples, he illustrates how the building work is constructed. He deals with foundations, external and internal walls, floors, roofs, staircases, plumbing, heating and electrical work.
There is also space in the book for a standard specification, useful weblinks and terminology defined.
For those who earn a living from alteration work this book should be at your elbow for reference purpose at all times. If you are not a professional the book can be useful for checking purposes to ensure the work is being done correctly.
