This is the sequel to my very first book, Accidental Outlaw. Chess Cates finds himself suddenly on the right side of the law when Sheriff Fitzwater is gunned down by an unknown assailant on the rooftop of a hotel across the street. In addition to that problem, the ghost of his past, Roland Burdette, seems to dog his footsteps with the arrival of the de la Posa family from Mexico. From Chapter Two: Old Friends In Peril
On the first anniversary of Roland Burdette's death, there were several callers to the graveyard to visit the burial place, and to observe how very plain the tombstone was that simply read:
Roland Everton Burdette
July 15th, 1829-June 16th, 1864

Deloria de la Posa returned to the cemetery where she saw a man standing there looking at the tombstone. She didn't recognize Chess Cates, having never seen him before in her life. She walked up to the grave. Chess looked at her guiltily. She heard him sigh, as though aggravated.
"Are you an old amigos of Roland's?" she asked. He shook his head no, looking her straight in the eye, suspecting whom this might be.
"No ma'am. Very much the opposite. I'm the man who put Roland Burdette there. I killed him."
Deloria felt a cold chill run up her spine to see the man who put an evil end to Roland's contemptuous deeds.
"I see. Why are you here if you hated him so?"
"To make sure he's still there," Chess said, very tongue-in-cheek.
