When it was apparent the South would lose the Civil War, many Confederates made up their minds to leave their homes rather than live under Union rule. The Ratliffs of Galveston Texas was one such familly. This book tracks this fictional family in its struggles to survive the Reconstruction Period, a time so harsh some historians refer to it as the South's second Civil War.
The fictional Ratliffs, like some twenty thousand southerners sail to Brazil to make a new life for themselves. Mattie Ratliff, the eighteen-year-old daughter expects to travel to Brazil with her parents, younger sister and infant brother along with Tom Mahon, her sweetheart. Instead, Mattie's family group includes Tom's friend from prison, Randolph Carlisle, leaving Tom in the Galveston jail.
Excerpt
Point Lookout, Maryland
January, 1865
Bayonet fixed, a grim Union soldier charged Tom Mahon as he tried to help a wounded comrade on a Virginia battlefield. Trapped, Tom squeezed his eyes shut and braced himself to die.
Seconds later, when nothing happened, Tom woke. He sighed with relief finding himself back in his tent at Point Lookout Prison Camp. He had been part of a group of captured Confederate soldiers transported there the day before.
Water dripped on his head through a hole in the tent and the wind howled through the openings in the canvas. At the moment a cold rain mixed with sleet soaked him and the eleven other men huddled in the inadequate shelter.

Professional Reviews
World Enough and Time
"Absolutely captivating from the very onset! Action, Mystery, Intrigue, Murder and Love, found then lost or stolen. Set in the last days of the Civil War and the years immediately following. World Enough and Times takes one back to share vividly the strife, heartbreak and sorrow of those who lived it. Nancy Madison mastered the dramatics of that time and created a must read novel that leaves you wanting more." Carroll Jones, author of Murder on Margin and Where Roses Bloom.
World Enough and Time
"Historical Fiction at its best. Nancy Madison recreates the end of the Civil War when Tom Mahon is released from a Yankee Prison camp and plans to begin a new life in Brazil with his true love. But an enemy plots against Tom while he struggles to regain his freedom." Terry L. White author of Ancient Memories, the Nazca series Last Priestless, Nazca Star and Bride of the Condor and the Chesapeake series, Chesapeake Harvest.
World Enough and Times
"Sweeping romance in the grand manner. Nancy Madison's World Enough and Time takes the reader on a journey from the defeated Confederacy to a new colony in Brazil, from love's promise to love's defeat, and back again. A great story that is beautifully written."
Arline Chase, author of Killraven, Ghost Dancer, and the Spirit series, Spirit of Earth, Spirit of Fire and coming soon, Spirit of Wind
