My nails received more attention than the TV, until a special report interrupted the regularly programmed news. I returned the brush to the bottle and blew on my right hand to dry the wet polish while I listened.
We take you to Longview Trail, on the north side of town, where Alysin Parks is live on the scene…
My dream unfolded on the screen. Blood pumped through my head, drowning out sounds from the TV, so the voice came and went.
‘The body of a young boy.’ ‘Awaiting notification of the family.’ ‘Cause of death unknown.’
I tried to call out for Todd, but found no air with which I could deliver the words. I sat frozen in place, feeling as though I would self-destruct if I tried to move. I stayed that way until the doorbell startled me back to reality some time later.
I closed my eyes and put both hands over my face, willing my body to disappear before the person on the porch saw me. I cried silently, thinking it had to be the police coming after me for not saving the boy’s life.
