Callie wondered if Dave was in that chair now, confined by his own chains. That was easier to accept than anything else she could think, but she saw the tear. One single tear rolled off his face and splattered on his dirty, torn shirt.
Maybe he remembered those times she had pointed out the homeless drunks on the street and said there you are in about ten years if you don’t wake up. She hated herself if that was the only memory he had left. She wanted to start her life over, using that measure to weigh every sentence she spoke. What if these are the last words this person will remember one day?
“Dave?” She tried to get his attention. “Do you remember the night Whitney was born? I tell her about that night every year on her birthday. I wouldn’t have made it without you there. Your love was so pure and selfless.”
He turned his eyes in her direction for a second, but didn’t change his expression. She wasn’t sure her words registered, but continued any way.
