Common Mistakes
Writers have shared goals, but also make common mistakes. Let’s eliminate them and get your writing off to a good start.
• Confusing Functions. Write, write, write without stopping to revise, edit, and polish. The urge to edit as we write is strong, but resist it. Just type your little heart out, ignoring bad grammar, punctuation, and whatever else you might want to revise. Editing is a separate function and should be treated as such. Remember, nothing is written in stone. Fix it up later.
• Fear of Rejection. Before writing your first words, you picture yourself opening the rejection letter. Stop it. Let go of the fear. If you’ve researched your project and studied your craft, you’ll be fine.
• Short Writing. Many writers assume it is easier to write a short paper than a long piece. Wrong. It is harder to summarize a lot of information in a short space than to use full descriptions. Just write all of your thoughts. You can cut your piece down later, if necessary.
